Cruise control on 91 not working

Picked up two 80's in the past two weeks both 91' on paper but door stickers show a 90 @198,000 miles and door on 91 @ 162,000 miles.
Any takers on explaining to why I needed two of these?!
Any way I also have factory repair manual, electric ,owners.
Both vehicles cruise control light come on but do not work.
Is there a common problem with this cruise control system?
Focusing on higher milage rig, already front end attention rotors, bearings, berfields etc.
All suggestions welcome.
Thanks, 2cruise

the cruise control on these seem to be very sensitive to volt levels, mine was working when i had a tail light shorted out, when i fixed this it no longer works. Start by making sure the brake fluid res it full, and the brake light is not lit on the dash

and welcome to the addiction

Put your cruise in diag mode (hold down the set button while driving) If the cruise light blinks your speed sensor is working, if it doesn't it failing) Mine works off and on. IMO the sensor costs to much to bother with.

It's probably a fouled speed sensor. Something like $100 for a new one... I wouldn't bother, what with the 3FE and all.

i had the same problem with mine. so one day i was just wondering around the passenger side engine bay area, and found that a connection was loose, all i did was touch them and the connections separated. so i plugged them baci in properly and all of the sudden i noticed that i had cruise control again.
before i noticed the cables, the cruise control light will come on, but not hold. i hope this is whats wrong with urs as well. best of luck.

If I can find the simple fixes on these I will fix them. The energy towards a result is based on the need for the result. Same rig, someone removed the temp sensor for the engine compartment cooling fan including the bracket on the manifold. Keeping the engine cooler seems important to me so this needs more att. than cruise control.Cooling fan system works but there is no switch or bracket the brackets are unavailable so one is being made. The switch/sensor is free from Totota with a shipping fee of $150.00+/-LOL
Thanks for your experience!

By getting two rigs I guess I entered the addiction in full force!
The need for the cruise is very limited but if it is simple to fix I will fix it.
saving time chasing rabbits in the field
I will try all of your suggestions with great appreciation.
