60%, yes...

Must be like when you're skiing, all the runs look vertical....

And I don't wheel in my yard......only in my ditch. LOL! That impressed the wife when she unexpectedly drove up.

Hmm,.. isn't a 45 degree slope = 100% grade?

Land Rover used to make a big deal out of being the only 4x4 capable of actually going up and down a grade like this in a controlled fashion.... not just a short one either which you can build up momentum and do with a lot of vehicles.

I know with my mud tires on,.. creeping over a 100% graded area like that... the brakes hardly hold and I start sliding as everything not bolted or strapped down in the truck tries to kill me.

'nuff said.... I think you draw a line down from the CoG and it'd be damn close to the rear contact patch...

You're right - in fact, for a 60 degree grade, I think it would be well behind it - in which case, you're going over. This is just simple mechanics and there's no getting around it, even neglecting issues of available torque, traction, approach/departure angles, etc.

Even the UNIMOG, which is famous for its climbing and side-slope abilities due to a low CoG, is rated to climb a max 70% grade (35 degrees).

Again, this was not the point of the thread and I don't mean to be knocking on anybody. I just find it interesting.

Quick update; I drove back out to the farm today and made the same climb on the back of the dam. This time I put it into 4 low and engaged the CDL. I got half way up and stopped and remained stationary for about 2 minutes. I wanted to see if the power steering fluid would drain or fall to the bottom/back of the reservoir. I finished the climb and heard no whining from the power steering pump. When I flushed/changed the fluid I added about 6 ounces of the Lucas power steering additive. Everything was smooth and quiet. Thanks again, for all of the information and good advice. Even though I rarely post, I really do enjoy this forum. Scott
