If I downloaded the Toyota Technical Guides, do I need a FSM for HG?

Last year I bought the Toyota subscription and downloaded a bunch of the Toyota Technical manuals from their website.

Is this the factory service manual or do I still need to order that to do a HG repair?

Depends. Did you use NaterGater's method to download the Toyota stuff?

I would recommend buying the manual, it is a much nicer package. I downloaded a bunch of sections of the manual and even worked out a new method of automatically downloading the set; although, I never got around to testing it because the FSM I ordered was much better than trying to kludge together all of the docs and getting them bound. It is like $80 bucks but well worth it when you look at the time and money requirements of downloading the entire manual and trying to bind it in a usable fashion.

I hope you don't need an FSM for a 1994. I ordered one last week and they are on backorder!

Don't know about that but I would suggest getting the DVD from IdahoDoug. From what I can tell that may help more than even having the FSM will.

Welp, I did mine with just the tech guides you speak of. But I downloaded any thing and every thing related to an 80. Then I created my own little web gadget with shortcuts and book marks but that's not important. You should certainly get the DVD and read all the HG related threads here first. If you are doing this alone and for the first time, watch the DVD couple/few times. Doug makes it sound really calm and seamless. I am sure by the time you finish reading all the HG threads and watch the DVD few times, you'd be a confident camper to take on the task.

Goos Luck

I did the little automated download thing, so I got every file related to both the landcruiser and the lexus, but when I was going through them yesterday it was kind of all over the place.

there was a section on checking the head gasket but it didn't say anything about how to loosen the bolts and what order or anything. I was wondering if the FSM has that specific of directions.

I did get Doug's video and it's calmed me down quite a bit on getting going but there is still a lot of basic info I would like to have seen.

I'd like to see how he got the hood off, and how he did a few other things. I think I'm going to try and video my entire removal/reinstall just so if I get in trouble or need to see how I got something off I can go back and see where I missed something.

I just can't tell how detailed the FSM is. Sounds like I need it in addition to the downloads though.....

Usually, from what I have seen so far and my own experience, things like removing the hood, lifting the head, etc. can be done in several different ways. It really depends on what tools/resources you have available. And how much can you improvise. Sounds like you have downloaded the tech bulletins in the same way I did. I had mine scattered all over the places. That's why I kinda created my own web gadget with whole bunch of links. There's a whole section that talks about the sequence of removing the head bolts. I forget the page number, some one else might chime in. But if you have downloaded every thing, you have the information of how to remove pretty much every thing. You can also do a search here, there are plenty of information here on that.

Matt,

On getting the hood off, it's just the 4 bolts holding the hinge to the hood, but take my advice on the HG video to put masking tape there and using a marker line on the tape to mark where the hinges were. Like, exactly where they were. This will save you slightly moving the hood, tightening it, shutting it slowly to discover it's too far forward, rearward, sideways, rotated left, or rotated right. Then doing it all over again. Do the marks, and you'll be able to put it back on quickly and with no frustration or body damage from the hood hitting the fender if you're tired.

To physically remove the hood, you need two people and that's mentioned on the 'Tips' list - Item #1.

Go for it - you're prepping well.
