Broken Birf
Guys,
I wanted to share these pics with you. Over the weekend I replaced my birfs and axles with Longfields. In the process, I got to clean the knuckle and the broken birf. I thought you may want to see the damage: The first picture is of the inside of the right knuckle. As the birf broke and we moved the truck a few hundred feet to a flat spot. The turning metal made it's impression on the knuckle. ![]() The second picture is of the pieces that I was able to recover. It is very impressive to see how the birf just shattered. ![]() Tomorrow, I can take more detail pictures of the broken pieces. A. you camera and picture quality is fantastic
B. I'm amazed that you've managed with the stock birfs for so long C. incredible the damage that can be had by just 100 feet of wheel turn, what trail were you running? __________________ Sam Shaya 96' FZJ80 convertable 4x4 Labs Rear end/Custom shock mounts KING shocks/ other goodies, but you get the idea. Was it just the internal cage that broke?
On the solid axle mini-trucks, the bell housing seems to be the most common failure point, hence the ring added for strength on the early Longfields. The 80 birf is a slightly bigger, so I'm curious if it's the bell that goes most often on the 80 birfs as well or is it the cage like here, or is both a common failure point. __________________ 1995 FZJ80, modified for regional expeditions. Ante up to an 80 series!
|
It seems like on the 80 series the birfield lets go with either the internal star or cage. I haven't seen anyone post with a broken bell, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. I wonder if having extra heat and cryo treatment could help the stock internal star and cage.

The birf broke last summer on the Dusy. The birf bell is fine, what shattered was the internal star.
I posted some pics of the chromoly axle & birf install here: Longfields Regards Alvaro __________________ Alvaro Rodriguez 96 FZJ80 "La Cabra" 08 Tacoma Double Cab 4x4 TCLA #12833 / BRC # 41799 KI7FZJ New web site with blog and pics Norcal wagons website INTI Roof Racks - Make a loan, Make a difference - Kiva.org |

Broken Shaft Front Axle
On my 80 axles I am running 4.56 Ring and Pinion, It is runing 35 x 10.50 Boggers. Last event I sheared the ring and pinion, I discounted this as landing on the front wheels on acceleration. Replaced the gears and installed a ARB locker to the front and testing over last week end I broke the front axle. It snapped between the diff and the birfield exactly where the oil seal sits, looked like it was cut with a knife - straight. I am unable to post pictures, but appreciate any advise you can give on this scenario. The axle broke on a mud hole with lockers on. I am hearing about the longfields for the first time in this forum, will this solve my issues. Has anyone heard of a German company manufaturing birfields with needle bearings ??Cheers

Sean,
We don't see that many broken birfs in our group. I think we wheel our rigs pretty hard. What kind of terrain are you wheeling on? On La Cabra I extended the stops at the end of the front axle to limit the turning radius. I'm OK with loosing a bit of turning radius as a trade off for better birf durability. Regards Alvaro Quote:
