Tailgate Armor

Is there anything for sale to replace the jerky carpet on the rear tailgate? I'm finally getting to install all of my rear trim after fixing all of the associated 80 leaks and would like something better and stronger on the gate. I saw what CDan has and was looking for something that I can purchase and bolt right in too lazy to start fabing something myself. Aluminum Diamond Plate is what I'm looking for. Hopefully I just sparked an idea for someone with metal skills and equipment to fab some for sale

George

I see your point however my knees are shot so I try not to crawl on anything hard I usually lift my self up and swing my ass onto the tailgate then reach into the truck this is not a problem at 5'6

Dan,
I'm too lazy to go look...

How thick was your aluminum plate? I thought it was 1/4". Do you think 1/8" would be thick enough to straighten out a slightly bowed tailgate?

Dan, a link to your exceptional tailgate job might be in order here.

Mine is 1/4 inch 6061.

2bad's offer is compelling but I believe that 1/8 inch is not thick enough.

What did you do to keep the edges from being very sharp?

Thanks. That's what I thought. I put a row boat in the back with the gate down and the bottom of the v-shaped hull bent the gate down just a little bit, but the upper gate doesn't really close the same. Now, I can push it back a little and it seems to latch better, but with my big fat ass sitting on it, it gets bowed again before too long.

Seeing you stack ammo boxes on yours, I gotta believe the 1/4" will firm it up and keep it straight. Not sure if 1/8 would be enough either.

Here's a couple photos.

The second one is with 5,640 rounds of .30 caliber M2 ball on the gate. That's ~430 lbs.

Whatever happened to the 80 with the propane stove installed in the tailgate...

Other ideas:
Padded suede for the sensitive rear end.
Shag carpet for the pimp 80.
Finished mahogany hardwood plank pink panty wagons.

You forgot the cottony soft terry cloth for those wearing pink panties.

If you just want to replace the carpet with something durable my first thought would be a piece of rubber similar to what they hang up behind you in a batting cage. Durable, easy on the knees but HOT as HE!! if in the sun.
