Air box/canister has a hole?

Is this hole stock in the air filter canister ? Mine is sucking up a bunch of gunk.

Yes, I'd assume you are missing the 'tuna can' that clips on down there.

Wow, I've never ever seen a truck missing that part! That's incredible.

It is amazing. Glad I didn't go into any deep water crossings. I should have looked into this when I got the truck last year and noticed the gunk.

This cruiser has a rebuilt 3FE from the PO and I'm afraid a lot of gunk got in through that hole. Or is there anything down the hose that would have been able to collect some of that?

That hole is on the intake side of the filter, so the air going to the motor is still filtered even with the tuna can off.

Yeah, but look closely at the pic, there is a gunky greasy buildup inside the walls of the air can. Looks like air coming in from that hole also sucked in crap from what appears to be a power steering fluid leak?

I didn't know that existed for a while, and when I finally figured out it was there, it was overflowing with dirt.

Someone took off the dirt catcher to clean it, and forgot to put it back on, or,
put it on, but did not get both latches tight; it is a bit tricky and if someone is in a hurry,
like at a dealer, it would rattle loose and fall down out onto the road.

It's function is to collect debris that gets sucked into the air intake ie: instead of flying
around continuously inside the filter muffler.

It should be cleaned everytime you check or change your filter, and then put back into
it's place.

If you don't want to buy a new one, at least plug the hole at the bottom of the filter can(muffler)
ie: with duct tape, to keep the road dirt.
