ABS Sensor interchangeability

I need to get your opinion on this:
Metal encased sensor vs. Plastic encased sensor

Are the functionally interchangeable? I tried bot in my '96 axels and they both fit fine with no interferences. Both measure the same for the same functional features. I see the differences as cheaper to build a plastic one vs a metal one....

What do you think or know on this subject?
