Dropped off the pattern, should have a sample back in a few days... we'll see how it fits, refine if required, and then hopefully blast a bunch of these out.

Sweet! I've been eye-balling higher amp alts for a while and the options seem to be really limited. The 130 Tundra alt is a nice option.

I had both the 130A and the 150A alternators tested at a friends shop and the 130A put out 146 amps. The 150A put out 160 amps. The 150A I had done a rebuild with new bearings and new brushes. The testing was done at speed not at idle. My friend wanted me to see the readout from where I was standing so he lifted the safety shield, the belt flew off and gave the old beard a trim. I was going to ask him to try to test at an idle speed but somehow with getting the facial hair removed I forgot.
Another fwiw, I took the alternator apart to make a puller for the one bearing and to be able to powdercoat both housing parts. This requires grinding off copper connections which I later had to WELD together. Just a heads up.

Bill

Picked up a 130 amp alternator from a Tundra V8 at Graham's Auto in Calera, AL. Price was $75 plus a little tax. Here's the website for those who may be interested: http://www.grahamsauto.com/direx.html.

Quick question.....

Is it not possible to have the stock Alt. that we have in our cruisers re-wound to put out this amperage? I have no clue, but was told that you could just have your alternator rewound for higher output???

I have heard that they can be rewound, but tend to run quite a bit hotter and have a considerably shorter lifespan. No actual experience though.

I just dropped off a generator at the local alternator shop and asked them your question. They said that alternators could be rewound for higher output. They did in fact sometimes purchase rewound stators for more amps. Along with the rewound stator the guy said it is a good idea to get the rotor rewound with heavier wire. Then, he said the rectifier and diode size should be increased as they were sized for the original output. Another comment was one of the reasons they run hotter is they then have higher output in the same small case size (and maybe with the above mentioned smaller sized components). He said the best and most economical way was to find a higher output alternator that could be made to mount up. In other words if a person has a unique alternator or the location is such that nothing else will fit; then rewinding is an option, albeit expensive.

I have no way of knowing if what he said is true or not and it is from my recollection of the conversation so take it fwiw.

No word on these brackets? I want to change my alternator and belts but would like to do this mod at the same time. Trying to stay patient.
