| Bike rack, V2.0 You guys may remember my vertical bike rack carrier/ ladder from a few months back. Well, it was a good idea, but really wasn't working like I wanted it to. It had a few problems:
1. It could only carry one bike
2. Needed extra parts made by Luke, and I've been waiting for nearly 4 months for those
Here is V1.0
To solve these problems Luke at 4x4 labs and I had come up with a new design that would replace the ladder when I wanted to carry bikes. But, I've been waiting nearly 4 months for him to find time to make the carrier, and frankly- got tired of waiting. Bike season is well in full swing here and I needed something NOW.
I took the design Luke and I had come up with to a local welder/ fabricator and had him bust this out for me. It took him 1.5 hours from cutting to final weld.
I brought it home, wiped it down with some acetone and hit it with paint. Here is V2.0 mounted to the 4x4 labs bumper
And with the bike carrier hardware attached (Yakima Boa mount system, would work with any Yakima roof bike carrier though, ie: steelhead, viper, etc... )
So, now I can carry 2 bikes outside the truck, the mount is very sturdy.

| Are you wheeling with the bikes on board? I had seven bikes on my 80 yesterday for a Mackinac Island ride. I can fit four on the hitch mount, two on the trunk mount (mounted on the hatch, between the hatch and hitch mount), and probably four on the roof but didn't need them. I guess I'd be nervous about wheeling with bikes on fork mounts. The forks are pretty tough, but the bike can really whip without your weight on it.

| Looks good! Just watch out for hitting the bike when you wheel (if you are wheeling with it on there). I had mine on the last trip like this and i nailed them 2-3 times. Luckily they would just drag and twist. |

| No major wheeling. Drive to the trail head and off....
Socal- where did you get your hitch extension, I need to pick one of those up as well.

| Doc, if you wanted to wheel with your bikes, say to a more remote biking location, could you conceivably mount the bikes "upside down" with the forks at the bottom, large rear wheel in the air (away from damage) ?
Would that also put the weight bearing on the rear wheel clamp and not on your forks?
What does that do to your departure angle? That said, you wouldn't want your handlebars to be the first thing to hit on departure.
Dan.

| I enjoy biking as much as I enjoy wheeling, so when I take my bikes I generally take them along to ride, not to haul.
I could mount them the other way around though and increase my departure angle if I had to.

| Doc -
That's a sweet set up for bikes and a swing-away ladder. Cool

| If you are only carrying 2 bikes max, that means 2 people max. Why not fold down the seats and mount them inside? You still have plenty of room for gear between / under the bikes. Mounting the bikes inside also serves as a greater deterrent for theft.

| Nice job Doc, I am currently finishing my bike mount for Luke's bumper as well. Similar in design but only a single, I might have to use your idea of staggering for another.

Really- it's a super design. One I can't take credit for.

| SoCal, is the long white tube a rod holder? If so, is it home made or store bought? How did you mount to the rack? Thanks! Quote:

| Fox shocks and XTR components I think? Nice. I had my mounts on the roof, but they were too damn high to get the bikes on and off easily.

-Eddie | Yep. I've always wanted a full XTR bike, have it now, but in all seriousness- it doesn't perform any better than a bike with full XT kit and XTR shifters. (I'm a big fan of the XTR shifters).
That's the same reason I ditched the roof rack many years ago and went with a hitch mount style. I ditched the hitch mount when I got the new bumper the spare tire carrier interferes with the bike support arm. I could make it work with a hitch extension, but then you've got this large lever arm on the back of your truck with $6k of bikes hanging off the end bouncing hard over every bump.

-Eddie | x2. So on the rare occasion I needed to haul a bike on the 80 (it usually went in the bed of my Tundra) I used Yakima 1-A towers to stretch a bar across the rear hatch. (See pic) The bike hung from the fork mount.
Not as slick as Doc's set-up, however. That swing-out is very nice. |
