Toad, that's a great idea, how did you secure the rear wheel though?

Yep that's the problem. I used a velcro strap down around the steel tube of the tow unit.

The 1-As never gave me a problem, but honestly I was always worried when I transported my bike that way. I would even run a bungee through the frame (at the headtube) and around the wind deflector just in case . . .

Mr. Toad, I like that idea. Wonder if my Thule mounts would clamp on there? I've used em on a Sentra, Grand Cherokee, and now the 80.

Doc, I have had the same bike since '96. Got a DiamondBack V-link, upgraded the rear triangle to aluminum, put on a Judy XC, got all Sram 9.0 sl shifters and rear d, XT front d and cog set, X517 wheelset, and bunch of misc. stuff. Still going strong. I do like the XT set, but love gripshift.

SOCALFJ, when my rig grows up, it'll look like yours! Sweet!

-Eddie

I would like the ability to move the bikes with out the need to put them up top as I do now although every time I was at a red light I would be looking in the rear view watching out for a rear ender.. I normally carry well over the replacement of the entire cruiser in bicycles when we go hit the trails.

I think the setup you have a sweet and sure it is kind of a pain to put them on the roof but the only way they will get demolished on the roof is if I forget they are up there (not likely). On the rear well then that is a chance I don't really want to take.
Not dissing just paranoid.

That is a great idea for a bike rack! Might have to copy that down the road after there's an aftermarket bumper on my rig.

nice!

one more rung and it'd be a ladder too...

I see this thing is fully cantilevered. No need to put a damper bumpstop on top?

Nope. Drove over some gravel roads this past weekend with a bike on there and there was no chatter. I didn't expect any really, it's pretty stiff.

I thought about gusseting the base to the mounting bracket, but the fabricator and I agreed that it didn't really need it.

Doc, nice bike rack - but why not just add two rungs to your swingout ladder at the offset needed for two bikes to fit? Cheaper and keeps your original ladder on all the time.

Doing that would have pushed the bikes further out, on the drivers side it would have contacted the spare, and on the passenger side it would hang off the side of the truck too much.

Wow... nice job. That almost makes me want to take my bikes out of the inside of my truck.

The only thing it's missing is some way to carry the front tire on the outside.

The trails I ride the most are open use trails and see a lot of horse traffic, so I ride through a lot of poo. I don't like to put my bikes inside because of that mostly.
