Why 80's H8 Mud

I went to a local wheelin spot many people know of called 360 which is known for some nasty mud holes and nice hill climbs. I ended up putting a dent in the passenger side rear quarter panel(slid into a tree), ended up stuck and had to be extracted twice, and got showed up by some wranglers . Just a quick FYI, dont go around mud in these sink tanks with 31" bfg a/t's without a strap and a friend. Other then that the truck did very well. I will post pics of the carnage tomorrow. I called a guy about some 35" muds before going out and picked them up after the run. I am sure it would rub like crazy but I am going to try and bumpstop and backspace properly until I get the lift.

the lack of lift hurt you more than anything...and ATs suck in mud.

My 80 will go all day in mud until the body hits bottom and it suction cups in place

Brakes and mud

I just travelled about 150km on roads like the picture. The biggest problem was when I pulled over for a lorry (truck) and nearly got stuck. In the process of getting out I got mud and stones between the disc and the brake backer plate on the left front wheel, which meant pulling the wheel to clean out the mess once I got unstuck. Later, the wheel departed the car because the lugs loosened back up after about 50km of pounding on these roads. So...I fetched the wheel, robbed some lugs from th other wheels, and put the wheel back on. Anyway...we made it. A fun trip, though I could have done without the 100m walk to fetch the wheel.

The other big problem was what the lorries and matutus (14 passenger buses, usually Toyota Hiace or Nissan equivalant) do to the roads. They're overloaded, and 2wd, and they make a total hash out of the surface. It took us 6 hours to go 150km.

Good luck with the big wheels! I'm looking at (later) putting Cooper STTs on my LC, probably 285/75R16s. Have to save some funds up first.

Cheers!
JM

You probably know this already, but some of the newer M/Ts are relatively quiet and perform similarly or better than some A/Ts on the road. You CAN have it all.

Hey I al ready know that BFG a/t's suck. I was in hopes of going through very little if any to get to the hill climbs. I havent test fitted the wheels yet but does anyone know if the chevy 15x8 rally wheels fit(brakes)? They are already mounted up and I didnt think abotu brake clearance before buying them.
If anyone else local wouldnt mind meeting up for some wheeling pm me your number and I will give you a call. I plan on going out to Mineral Wells soon for a camping trip, wheeling trip, and a nice dive in the brazos. Hope to meet up with some of you and get to see some of your nice rigs and my old one (bling, bling)

this is why i h8 bfg ATs... i think they are one of the worst tires out there on anything but fluffy snow, hardpack or dry pavement. in any sory of wet dirt, never mind mud, they clog like hell. in rain they have NO channels to speak of and suck. same goes for slush - no channels? no place for the water to go. on hardpack snow, no complete siping. i will never own another set, ever.

Please tell me he's treading lightly on private property and/or that's a actual trail? Cause it sure doesnt look like it.

It is an old non-maintained road on the Terlingua Ranch Property in Texas' Big Bend area. I have an adobe house on the property and I pay road maintenance fees every year to be able to drive all the roads....maintained or not.

As per the above it's not the 80 that sucks, it's the tire - an 80 on MT's go through mud just fine!

Yep, I can vouch for that being a trail. I was at the bottom end cursing my small BFG AT's.

No one can be told what the Terlingua is....you must drive it to understand it.

You don't see the ROAD that he's on? Look at the rocks on the outward side of the slope. Pushed up with a bulldozer (or possible a hand labor work crew with picks and shovels) at some point in the past when the road was graded.
