Cool Dumb/Easy Electrical Question

Hi guys,

Here is a bit of a dumb question. I wanted to add two fuse blocks in the engine compartment for accessories (like many of the guys on this forum have done).

One Fuse block will be 12v BAT and the other will be 12v Switched (to Ignition).

Here is my question: Inside the engine comparment, where is a good place to tap into 12v switched? (12v Bat is pretty obvious). The coil has two lines a grey line and a red line. Is either one of these a good candidate? I'd hate to weaken the ignition signal to the coil.

Thanks,

Rod Diaz

How is that switched? I need a source that has no power when the ignition switch is in the off position.

Thanks,

Rod

If you're putting in a fuse block, you're probably thinking of drawing a significant amount of current. You won't find a switched power wire capable of doing that. Rather, you can use any switched lead in conjunction with a relay to switch a high-amperage wire directly from the battery.

Cool Relay

Yes, the relay is a great idea. I'll go with that.

As far as the ciraget lighter, mine is always hot. Ignition on or off. Not sure if that's because I have LX 450 or because it got re-wired by someone else (PO).

Thanks for the ideas,

Rod

Stock wiring on your LX450 would mean the cig lighter socket is switched with the ignition. If yours is always hot it is not stock. Check to be sure you have proper fusing to this modified 12v outlet. The stock assembly also has a tiny fusible link on the back of the cig lighter receptacle; in addition to the 5amp (IIRC) fuse in the fuse panel to the left of the steering wheel.
