JDM Aux Fan Install - It doesn't get easier
With as packed as my engine bay is I felt I needed to add an Auxiliary fan. I had forgotten how much room there is in a stock truck for good airflow and was reminded after changing the filter on my daughters LX450.
I was talking to Cdan a few months ago about his set-up and he uses a JDM Fan and said it bolts right in with no modifications.
True to Dan's word, take off the grill. Attached fan using three bolts and wire it up, simple as that. No need to remove the horns or make brackets.
I installed a 30 Amp relay in the engine bay with always hot 12V so I can let it run even when the engine is off. I also wired in a manual switch so I could control when it comes on and off. I put the switch in the little grommet below the ignition.
Installing the fan itself took 20 minutes if that. The relay, switch and wiring another 20-30 minutes.
This was one of the easiest mods I had done.
How does it work. Driving around town today in 81 deg heat (no AC on) the temp gauger climbed up to about 198. Switched the fan on and it dropped 10 degrees in minutes.
Don't forget this is a DC fan. If you wire it back wards it will blow out instead of in so check it before you put the grille on. I had to guess which way to wire it and check the airflow direction before putting the grille back on

Great writeup!
This is definitely going to be one of my first mods. The A/C in my LX doesn't blow quite as cold as I'd like while setting in traffic (in 90º+ FL heat), and I bet that fan on the condenser makes a difference. Lower engine temps would be a welcome side effect as well. May I ask what your total cost was for this mod?

Where did you get the relay and thermostat for the job?

Hey Ken,
Is the fan same as the fan on 91-95 4Runner? That was a clean install. Another completed mod, eh?

Don't know if it is the same as the 4runner, I ordered it from Cdan, he can tell you.
Relay is mounted on the firewall next to my aux fuse box. No thermostat since I am turning it on manually in the cab.
It was a little over $200 bones for the fan, don't remember exactly as it has been sitting in my garage for a while during my month in Australia. Switch and relay and wire another $16.
The relay came from Checker. It was one for a external light setup. Make sure the pacakge includes pinout information.

I would love to get a pusher fan but the space in front of my grille is eaten up with the intercooler rad. and tranny cooler. If this summer's temps cause problems it's hood scoop or other venting on the slate.

I wish I had room for this thing - with the intercooler in the way it is hard to find the fit. I think some extension blocks to basically push the plastic grill out might make it work? Still a sideways view will give the truck the appearance of the grill falling forward. Looks like a wonderful mod though.

aux fan wireing
Greetings
This is how mine is wired. Works flawlessly, and maintains cool vent temps while not moving. Manual switch with indicator light lets me know when the fan is in operation

As per CDan - No. You can use the male plug from a 93+ (IIRC) Runner fan to rig up the wiring though.
Romer - Where you gonna put your hand throttle now?

What is the big benefit of doing this? Are you essentially adding life to your engine? besides allowing to run cooler? Dumber question: you are adding a second fan to the engine bay? confused...

It pushes more air through the condenser and radiator. Especially helps when you're in a slow go situation with the AC on. Mounts in front of the condenser behind the grill.

The Second Gen 4Runner is a clutch driven fan.

My question is has anyone successfully replaced the stock fan with any kind of electric fan config? I'd love to ditch my clutch-driven fan.

That has been discussed quite a bit, and while there are advantages, the reliability if the stock fan wins out.....

My brother's truck has a new blue hub and a 14" electric pusher, mine has an older blue hub that has been tuned up with 10,000 fluid. Mine out performs his big time! I bought the same fan at the same time as his and have sold it. The tuned up blue hub works very well, can now sit in traffic at 115F+ and still have nice cold air from the vents.
If you have a supercharger, then everything changes. Due to the fan size, spacing it will never move as much air as a stock fan, even with an upgraded clutch. With the S/C adding the pusher is a good upgrade.

TRU, I wonder if your fan pushing that much air decreases your mileage?

Romer- IIRC, CDan has exactly the same setup and he said that his produced no significant coolant temperature decrease. 10F is huge! Are you sure the decreae is not due to the fan clutch changing fan speed or the thermostat opening? I have a 14", 3000CFM pusher fan installed and, while AC performance is much better, coolant temperature does not change according to OBD2. And I have verified that it is pushing air into the condensor and it is sealed against the condensor properly.
How did you measure this 10F decrease? Can you take multiple measurements with fan on and off and post them? Is there anything else you did differently from CDan to get such a great coolant temp decrease while he did not? I'll post some measurements from my setup soon for comparison.

I'm of the mind that most any vehicle manufacturer's OEM electric fan will be as good as any clutch fan, because when a car builder offers a 7 or 10 year warranty on a drivetrain with an electric cooling fan, he's going to put top quality parts and labour into the assembly of that fan to prevent warranty claims due to overheating.
If something like Ford's 19" Crown Vic (fleet/cop) fan or Mazda's dual fan from the older RX7 pulled enough CFM, I'd give it a try.
**Note: I don't live in a hot climate. Overheating, even when stopped in traffic for extended periods isn't an issue here.

I remember reading that after Dan "tuned" his blue clutch that the pusher made no difference. And at that point only opening the hood helped lower the temps.

I have not tuned my blue clutch, I will do that later. This was a sample of one as I just installed it. Driving in traffic stop and go, no AC. Turned the fan on and saw the aftermarket temp gauge go down, could have been coincidance, but I think a good part of it is due to the fan. I will run some more tests. I think Dan did his test with the AC on. I also know that if Dan doesn't turn it on in hot weather with the AC On, the temp goes up.
Dan is the one who recommended I get one. I wouldn't think he would do that if I wouldn't see any real difference. He told me about being able to sit in high heat with the AC blasting and the fan on not letting the truck get hot.
