Rear mud flaps rust

Hi,

the top bolts holding my rear mud flaps (both sides) are broken due to too much rust and the mud flaps are loose, they are still holding from the other bolts, but they are now sitting lower than their usual notch on the fender cover. it looks ugly, but it's not like I can bolt them back into place, the entire thing is rusted out behind the plastic. I could screw it on directly I guess...

Also, I have a rust issue under the running boards cover, causing it to be rippled.

Is there anything to be done that is worth it other than replacing the whole thing?

I can't simply remove them as my wife and kids need them.

Cheers

JF

replace the runners with sliders. If you plan on keeping this truck you need to tackle any and all rust as soon as you know it's there. Get cracking on those mud flaps before you have a giant hole in your quarter like I did.

About all you can do with the stock running boards is remove the plastic, chip off the rust, grease the area heavily, and reinstall the plastic. The board may be rusted through underneath.

I'd put some screws through the mudflap where you can, to reattach it. Toyota still designs a few things for rust-free climates and woe to the folks living in salt country.

For the mud flaps, step one is to remove them and get the rust under control. You can get a cheap sand blaster from Harbor Freight and spend hours blasting, or have a blast shop do it for you in no time. Next replace any metal that was blasted away, and seal everything with POR-15. Then re-install the mud flap; you may need to re-drill and tap the mounting holes.

The running boards are easy. As was stated earlier, pull the covers off of them and get them blasted and coated in POR-15 and they are done.

Permanently killing rust is the key, and I am not aware of any product as useful in this task as POR-15.
