Shaky DS mirror fix

After three years of shaking, my DS mirror finally let go. The first warm day, while driving with the window down, I noticed a distinct rattling coming from somewhere. Turned out to be the mirror. Tried tightening the screw at the bottom, but it wouldn't get tight, just slightly snug. Next day it was loose again. Took it off, and pulled out the mirror. Turned out one of the "wings" was broken, and the screw hole was cracked. Tried a fix with super glue and wire, but the glue wouldn't hold on that type of plastic. In desperation I went to the local pick and pull, where they have a really bashed in '93. No luck, as the DS mirror was destroyed, and the PS side had the same problem ( they are NOT interchangeable, I found out). Right next to it was a '95 $runner, with an intact DS mirror. Took it apart and lo! It has basically the same motor, and it was intact.

It didn't have wire plugs like my '80, so I had to snip off the wires. Cost $20. Took it home, and disassembled it, and discovered the motor internals turned out to be identical to mine, except for the plugs. A simple swap of the two internal motors and wiring completed the changes, and aside from a couple of glitches reassembling the thing, it came out perfect. No more shaking. If anyone would like, I could post a few pics (if I could figure out how), with some reassembly tips. A job. Ned

My mirror had a broken tab as well...however, the other side was in place. To fix, I just took out the mirror and let it hang while I 'snotted' up the bracket / tab area with black RTV silicone and then reset the mirror in-place, installed bottom screw to hold in-place and let dry. I haven't had any 'shaking' problems since and it still is functional. Try it...worked like a champ for me!

This is a pretty common problem. Here's a link to a thread with pix and descriptions of some of the fixes people have done: http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.p...shakey+mirrors

Epoxy might be a better choice than super glue. I recently repaired mine with some JB weld and a couple of #4 screws. Just remove the bottom screw and remove the mirror ( keep track of the wires as they're all seperate) then simulate what the factory did with the epoxy instead. I can't seem to find a pic right now but I'll continue to look.

just got done replacing my motor assy with a 95 4runner. The hardest part was finding the mirrow, very easy install. I had to buy the whole ds mirror even though all i needed was the motor piece.

For wiring issues all i did was replace the motors, using my old LC motor with wire and connects. Everything fits into the 4runner's assy. didnt take any pics and after doing it there are really none needed.

No data... but mine started shaking again after awhile. Then my DS mirror got damaged on the trail (it would swivel around) so I just replaced it with one on ebay. ~$70 for an entire new assembly with mirror, housing, and motor, plug-n-play.

My DS mirror is beyond repair. it was ghetto fixed by the PO, but now its pretty much dead. What is the part number for the inner part, with the motor and swivels in it? I can't find any cheap option on ebay, so i think i'll order it from CDAn. somebody halp!

If you used the screws as well, it should last quite a while. Mine is still fine after many, many off road trips including Moab and the Rubicon.

Does anyone have any suggestions for testing the motor?

My PS mirror was loose so I took it off to try to fix it, reassembled with no improvement and now the motor doesnt seem to work.

Does anyone know where I can get the part that the mirror is in with an intact mirror?
I fixed my tabs and when I was putting the pin that holds the mirror to the motor assembly together I broke the glass.

my 91 had a broken wing on the DS mirror plate. i was able to find a plastic kit from the hardware store that actually allowed me to mold a brand new wing. some card board and scotch tape held with pins for the mold and a little dremel tool shaping afterwards and it was good as new. the plactic kit has coloured plastic powder and the liquid catalyst plus some molding putty all for about 10 bucks. it works good on most plactics and really helps mending cracks.
according to the package it is available in larger sizes for the bigger jobs.
the great thing about this stuff is that it cures rock hard in a hour and sticks to existing plastic.
if anyone wants the brand name i can look in my garage tonight and post the name
cheers

My d/s mirror has been shaky since I bought it a year ago. Blew off in the car wash yesterday and landed in the tire guide of the wash. All i could do was watch the back wheel drive over the mirror! Fix your mirrors boys...fix your mirrors.
