Smile EGT Placement on Gas / Turbo - Feel free to chime in Diesel guys

Okay, finally made up my mind, going to get an EGT gauge, now I need some help on sender placement. I've read all the threads I could find on this subject and I understand the "ideal" locations, 4"-6" from head on cylinder furthest from fuel rail inlet (potentially most lean aka hottest), pre-turbo for more realistic temps, every inch away from head temps get cooler and less accurate... yada... yada...

For ease of installation / life of turbo I'd rather go post turbo. I'm a little paranoid getting metal shavings / slag or potential broken probe in the turbine. So how "inaccurate" will my temp reading be if say I'm 2" past the top down pipe flange?

Disregard the current bung, I'd like to have one put in closer to the flange so that the wiring is a little more out of harms way. Then I can keep the current one available for tuning.

So am I being overly paranoid of turbine damage? Will the readings just be a consistent few hundred degrees off? Is it worth the time and energy to get the probe as close to the head as possible?

Everybody says exhaust gases cool very rapidly when they hit the pipe, so how much cooling will happen with where I plan to place it?

In my experience, the manufacturer of the specific EGT gauge you purchase will have detailed information about the placement of their probe. On mine, I installed the probe on the back side of the downpipe, facing the engine bay, but fairly close to the distance your existing bung is located. You can also wrap your downpipe (and just about everything else if you are so inclined) in the insulation available at performance shops (e.g. Summit Racing) that may function to stabilize your readings at the location of the probe and according to their marketing, carry away hot exhaust gases away from the engine bay more efficiently.

But then again, you are half-Canadian...that's not half-Newfie is it?
