Just filled up. I drove this tank of fuel at 120-130 kms/hr, heavy on the throttle.

81.13 litres and 565 kms (351.07 miles)

for a total of 14.36 litres/100kms or 19.75 imperial gallons.

I am going to turn the fuel down a bit now, and drive 100kms/hr max for the next tank and see what I get.

I checked it again today, 15-40 km per trip, 90-105kph average wityh some high speed stints and some city driving, but mostly country roads in the Laurentians, 11.3 l/100. Pretty consistent with my last figures, eh? That's about 10% better than what I used to get in winter at the same speeds under the same conditions with the 15% smaller tires. All figures corrected for actual distance driven.

For those who still drive the BJ60, that's about 10% more than what you would get under similar conditions. Not bad for an engne that has twice the HP and much more usable torque!

Louis, your figures are pretty much what I got on a short trip last winter at that speed (and close to what I got doing short trips in the cold).

Getting around the same as everyone else - I don't go often without towing in-between fills and that makes her suck like any gasser.

Diesel here is still under a buck a liter, the thing pulls heavy loads around town like a tank and its engine longevity should make the enigizer bunny blush.

... and the sound of a turbo - can't beat it.

I'm getting about 18-25 per imp. gallon depending on temp., cruising speed and duration of trips. Like other owners I've noticed an exponential rise in consumption after about 100kph. When driving in the Baja this winter (slow roads, warm weather) I consistantly got 25 mpg but as soon as I got home 18 mpg.Tony

I should add that my mileage is on 33's, city driving (short bursts to 120-140) stop and go as well, and AC on all the time.

I have been forcing myself to stick to 100 max and the mileage is doing much better so far.

What 33s are you using, and are you seeing the same mileage as I with those at my speeds? I'm having a hard time finding skinny 33s on 16 inch rims with an AT or road type tread...

They are BFG at's, 285,75,16's fat and about 33 inches. I dailed the fule back a bit, and will try it again after this tank of fuel. The fuel guage is just under half and it is at 440 kms. BUt I expect the bottom half of the guage goes much quicker.

This is pretty much what I get doing the average running around with my old 285/75/16 Bridgestones... About 425-450 at half mark, but this is uncorrected, I found that these 32.5 inch tall tires need a 7.5% odometer correction. So 425 would actually be actually approx. 457km.

We need figures!!! Measure your actual wheel diameter (across, not from top to bottom, which would have the normal flat spot). If your odometer is the same as mine, that would give you a figure which you divide by 30.25 (whcih is pretty much OEM diameter), make your corrections, and fill the tank to the brim and check fuel used versus odometer.

I established the 30.25 figure after calculations from highway marker numbers over a 100km stretch, versus my actual odometer figures and my actual tire diameter.

PS is your exhaust stainless steel on this rig? I know it's got a less restrictive flow than mine (it's also louder ), just wondering if it's SS and its size...

Yes it is a stainless system on it, I think it is a 3 inch, but might be 2.5 inch.

I'll measure the tire when I get a chance.

OK this time i got 598kms on 76.9 litres at about 110 kms/hr max. I tries to keep at 100 - but was really hard as I like to go fast. Next tank I will keep it at 100 max

Is that corrected for the size tire you are using? The 285/75/16 Bridgestone Dueler is approx. 32.5 inches tall new, worn it is about 32.2 inches high, which is actually 7.5% larger in diameter from OEM size (about 30 inches) as measured on my odometer using highway markers.

Hence your fuel consumption uncorrected is 76.9 / (598/100) or 12.9 l/100 but if you are using 285/75/16 the figure is closer to 12 l/100.

My last tank yielded (mixed runs at 120, 80 and 90 but a bit faster than I usually go at) about 11.2 l/100 corrected for the tires I am using. Uncorrected, I went 530km with 63.8 l of fuel.

What engine oil are you using? I just switched to Rotella T 15W40, thought I'd use more fuel, but so far, the change is not significant.

When I first used my cruiser (12 months ago) I used:
93.36 litres
785.5 km's
=8.41 km/l
=11.89 l/100km
=23.9 mpg (imperial gallons)
That's city driving (ideal conditions, but normal driving).

This was for the non-turbo 1Hz diesel and 5 speed manual.
There's no way in the world I would get that out of a petrol 80 series Landcruiser under the same situation!!

Also, I get much better fuel economy while 4WDriving than a petrol cruiser. It's only highway cycles where the petrols come close!
My previous HJ61 12H-t powered cruiser used to get over 1000kms out of the tank on trips. I got better fuel economy out of this than I did my standard 6 cyl petrol powered Fords (that most people drive here!).

Economy has dropped in my 80 series Landcruiser since fitting the Safari turbo and having the fuel turned up, fitting bigger tyres and a 3" lift. Now I get around 7.62 km/l (around 22mpg (imp)).

I'm running 265 Toyo A/Ts, stock susp, auto. Only mod that should make any difference being the 3" straight pipe. I get about 11l/100 average. That works out to 25mpg (UK) on the highway. the best I've seen is 27, and the worst is around 21-22.

I have OME lift with 33 x 12.5 tires, 114,000kms, inj pump seems to be tweaked a little.
In town 500km/tank. Hwy 600+/tank - whatever mileage that works out to. I make the engine work to my advantage when I want it to.
Currently gas is 105.9/litre and I am happy with diesel at 86.9/litre at the pump.

M/T '90HDJ80, ~350,000km on the clock, part-time 4WD, 235/85R16 cooper STs at 50psi, stock height suspension.
About 10.5L/100km on short trips city/backcountry
12L/100km towing the tri axle deckover trailer (2200lbs empty) at 90/100km/h
15L/100km towing the trailer with another cruiser ontop, same speed.
I burnt about 480L of fuel in three days last weekend on a rescue trip

I have a completely standard diesel 80 with a manual transmission - I average 26 mpg (imperial gallon) which is about 22 to the US gallon or 9 liters to 100 kms.

On a recent May long weekend trip to Osoyoos, with the 81 (VX limited, auto, full time 4wd, Rancho 3"ish lift, 33" tires) fully loaded with the family and camping gear, we did 616.3 km (corrected 7% for the 33" tires) on 71.3 litres of fuel, which equals 11.6 litres/100 km. I think that's pretty decent for such a heavy vehicle on that stretch of highway, which has some very steep winding hills, all the while keeping up (and passing at times) the rest of the traffic.
It's my daily driver also, and I get a pretty consistent 590 km (correct 7%) per tank before the fuel light comes on, on my regular route to work. This is from Pitt Meadows to southern Burnaby, a distance of approx. 30km each way (1 hour each way). There are some rare stretches of open road, but most of the time it's quite stop and go or just idling along, especially on the way home in the afternoon through New Westminster.

Seriously, the deflection is very reasonable and the contact patch is perfect when loaded, ride quality is not that bad. This is mostly a heavy towing machine and I need it ready at any time, otherwise I'd drop to maybe 45 for driving solo

it surprise me a bit .. driving around the city ( Marilu it's my DD ) 28 PSI - 30 PSI and I feel 'em like a rock ( actually Toyos are like a rock .. )

Off course I keep in mind that we don't have the same kind quality roads that you have up there ..

The bad roads are a bit shakey indeed but not worse than in a usual car I'd say.

OK I guess it's about time for me to add a post to this thread, a favorite subject...

I've been measuring for the past few years driving conservatively on fairly bad roads (living north of Montréal) doing mostly provincial highways full of bumps, cracks and the like going up and down on mild hills (200-400 meters) for 30% of the time the rest being on fairly smooth highways, average distances 35 km per drive from cold, with 235R16 tires at 48 PSI and these are the average figures I get:

winter 13 l / 100km
summer 11 l / 100km

short trips only:
winter 15/100
summer 12/100

long trips at 90 kph (>100 km)
winter 11/100
summer 10/100

very long trips (>500km, engine hot all the time)
winter 10/100
summer 9.4/100

There you have it... It's significantly thriftier in summer...

Here's a quick conversion formula

282/ (Imperial MPG) = litres/100km
282/ (litres/100km) = Imp MPG

18 ImperialMPG = 15.6 l/100 *Ouch*
12 ImperialMPG = 23.5 l/100 *Yeeellllp!!!*

For US Gallons use 235 instead of 282... Makes it seem much more of a gas guzzler

BTW my Mom just came back from the UK (Wales) and found everything quite expensive.... My condolences!

15.23L/100kms on my first tank. 496kms and the light wasn't on yet.
I filled up with 76L though. my goal is for 12L. After that who knows.
10L/100kms? one step at a time for the narwhal

I got 6.5km/l on mixed highway and city driving with A/C on, with stock 275 tyre and one leaking injector awaiting to be fixed.

I was thinking to remove 3rd row seat and spare tyre to further reduce weight, and got the injector rebuilt etc.

I also think to change to smaller tyre...
