Homemade tire carrier
So thanks to Wildyoats I decided to build a tire carrier. It looked fairly simple all I had to do was borrow a welder from a buddy and try to weld. Let me know what you guys think and any ideas, by the way its not done yet, gotta make license plate braket and light.
By the way if you were wondering what that little shiny sticker is on it, it was a piece of chrome moly left over from a frinds wrecked dragster. Cheers

That looks quite trick! Can you snap a few more shots of your spindle fab work and the finished product please?

That's not going to be easy. I would guess your gas was either too low or you forgot to turn it on (or it was windy outside) on a couple of those, no? I only say that because I've done it.
All in all I like it. It looks like you threw enough spank on the welds, function over form I say!

I really like the idea and I think the basics are good.
Here comes the BUT. I not sure on the latch imo not strong enough. The welds and the reinforcement to the spindle, again not strong enough. The nice thing is these items are easy to remedy. Good principal but maybe needs some fine tune. My .02 ken __________________ 97 with thingy's and dodads ![]() Now with added geek KI6JEO

That's really nice. I like the look with a stock bumper. Did you have to make any cuts once you took the plastic off? This might be really cool as some kind of bolt on kit.

is the bottom of the spindle just welded to a plate?
you might want to add some mid-spindle support there.

Nah, if properly welded to thick plate, it's solid. That's how a lot of trailers are built - the spindle is simply welded to a plate and it's good for thousands of pounds.

I am with Jim here. Way back did a design like that. You need to gusset the spindle. It will eventually break off. The stresses and the leverage of the carrier and wheel is not the same as a trailer.

but the load of a wheel and tire are basicly centered over the spindle, not loaded 2-3 ft out.

I think you did an awesome job for a first try.
Put a fat old tire on there, and go try to knock it off in a parking lot close by. Check for cracks, and keep modifying it. __________________ Pablo '94 FZJ80 215K 6M1,Optima Red Top, Bilstien'd, Mobil 1, DBA DnS front Rotors, 285/75 Revos, George's LED's, MetalTech Sliders, Slee Short Bus Front Bumper, OME 850/863 |

if you have good support under the latching end so that the bumper there carries much of the weight of the tire it won't exert anywhere as much leverage and shock stress on the spindle as if it's left floating.

Home made tire carrier
Thanks for the replys everyone, Christo and Jim you guys were dead on about reinforcing the spindle, I used a piece of 3/4 solid moly and triangulated it. Yes and it was very windy that day as I remember but will definitely practice welding before next creation. As for the latch, my first latch was a 90 degree one and couldnt get it to work. I just happened to stumble into a Izuzu heavy truck dealership and saw the current latch, its seems very strong and cost me a whole $20, time will tell.
Thanks everyone

Wow. I'm not in a position to judge its sturdiness but is sure looks clean (once the bumper corner is back on
). I like the dragster component as well. As for every homemade gear, I'd like to know how much you spent on it?

As for cost maybe a hundred bucks, I got the spindle and the round piece the tire bolts to from DIY4.com (do it yourself 4x4) . And as for material me and some friends built a trailer grill a couple years ago, left over scrap metal went to everything else and some roll cage tubing.

Very cool!
Very, very cool, BRO! It makes me want to do my own. I love you design and I am gonna totally rip it off by building my own. I really like the use of the stock rear bumper.
