Driving like a Granny

Since gas has been approaching $3.00 here in the ABQ area, I decided to see what would happen if I drove really slow everywhere, started slow from stop signs and red lights, and in general, drove like a granny.

Specs: Lifted, 35's, heavy.

Gas: 86 octane, full tank.

I drove till I ran out of gas basically and had to pull over to the side of the road and take out the 5 gal. from the back and fill her back up.

For the tank, I got 319 miles.

I drove to and from work: 17 miles each way= 34 miles everyday x 5 days= 170 miles just for work. Add say 5 miles each work day gives me 195 miles just for work commuting.

I also drove a few different places (Beowulf's house, Ruadhigh's house, and a couple of other places) but mainly stuck with a very specific routine.

Roads that said 30mph, I drove 25mph; roads that said 65mph, I drove at 55mph. When I could, I drove in OD. But mainly in 3rd most of the time (there really isn't anyway around this without regearing). I also had the "Power" button on the entire time. No A/C.

This tank lasted almost ten days. I was pretty impressed.

This seems to be the only way to make gas last, so to speak, in an 80.

Of course, driving a stock 80 like this would probably yield even more miles.

Just a data point. I'm looking hard for a DD because basically I cannot philosophically stomach spending this type of money on gas for a 3 ton truck that is not being used for what it was meant to be used for: expedition and off road. Just doesn't make sense to me.

That's all. Good evening gents.

Nice. I think I would gouge my eyes out to drive like that! I've tried it and didn't make it 10 miles. It's worth 3 or 4 mpg to me to drive a little more aggressively, but gas isn't at $3.10 in my area, AND I have a commuter.

I work 5 minutes from home and the cruiser is the family vehicle. When my wife is going to be running errands and doesn't need the extra seat belts she comes up and swaps vehicles. We think twice about driving the 25 miles to see family EVERY weekend. Basically, any time we can take the Subaru, we do.

It's nice to think that if I needed better mileage in the cruiser I could let my wife drive while I closed my eyes and pretended not to notice that she's only going the speed limit.

Damn man, that is insane. The highest I've ever recorded was a trip 150mi using 8.587g - 17.47mpg - and that was going downhill from 7000ft to 2000ft in a completely stock truck

Beno, with your gears and tires, that truck is better suited at highway speeds, no? Not around town kind of stuff. You're way overgeared for that kind of driving.

Yeah So Cal gas prices suck! :( Plus I've been using the 80 as my DD might switch back to my other car, 20mpg but premium so it's almost as bad.

How can yall run that low octane stuff??? 86? That's crazy. My 97 has need premium (92-93) for years or it pings horribly.

I have had no problems with misfires, pinging etc. on my 1997. I run have run whatever is cheapest since I bought the cruiser. I have 185k on the odometer.

The only high octane stuff I would be interested in using if it were available would be really high octane stuff--105 and up. And with that, I would probably only run a tank once a month or so just to clean things out a bit.

86 is fine for my cruiser.

I run the lowest we can get (87) in my cruiser, with timing that has been advanced significantly, and it still does not knock or ping.

I commute about 60 miles/day in my rig until the new LS7 RX-7 is completed. I average 14mpg with 33's, 2.5" lift, stock gears going 75-80mph probably 85% highway with some stop/go traffic.

I put in $82 worth the other day with 87 octane (23.5 gallons). $3.28 gallon. Higher octane won't clean anything out BTW and is a waste of money unless you are running forced induction and turning up the boost. If you want to add a good fuel injection/fuel system cleaner go buy a bottle of Chevron Techroline. (they sell it at Costco also)

Hoping the new LS7 (575rwhp) powered RX-7 will achieve 20-22mpg highway on 91 octane. (427ci with T56 transmission (.50 6th gear double overdrive with 3:90 gears out back and 26" tall 335/30/18 tires). My commuter car!

Hey mark, that rx7 ls7 is gonna be a beast! Thanks for helping me and my friend out with Sonny's old white rx7 ls1, we're going to go check it out tomorrow and hopefully purchase it.

Those tires are gonna cost like $400+/each

The STi will be gone by this summer (17-20mpg), so all I'll have is the 80. Since I dont want to get raped at the gas pumps, I'm going to pick up one of these as a commuter (to campus, grocrey shopping, and etc):

You might try disconnecting the battery while at the gas pump then fill up & reconnect the battery and hopefully the computer will readjust after 4 to 5 start-ups and drivings. I don't feel you should have to run a premium fuel in these rigs...my .02

In a vehicle that doesn't require premium fuel...DON'T EVER GIVE IT A TASTE!

Wow, I feel bad for griping about $2.68/gal last night. Mine loves the 87 btw, I had zero differance in running the 87 versus the 93 octane here.
