Is the FZJ80 loud?

Hey guys - just a question. I have had my stock 97 FZJ80 for about 6 months now. It seems to me that during regular driving the sound in the cabin from the drivetrain/engine is quite loud compared to other trucks I have had/been in. Nothing seems wrong, it just seems that when I'm on the gas the engine/drivetrain emits a very low frequency grrrr into the cabin, much more so than my 2000 4runner ever did. It's more noticable when the engine is cold. Perhaps it's that I'm used to driving a manual transmission and this is my frist automatic. Perhaps I'm just listening for something that isn't there.

Do your trucks sound like this?

Well it seems to me that my 95 just started doing this also! Now i thought i new the regular sound my 80 made but this last week it seems it has gotten maybe a little louder! I was thinking it might be something with the exhaust but it doesnt seem like its as obnoxious as an exhaust leak so i dont know maybe im just anal... did yours kinda start doing it all of a sudden or has it been doing it?

I've only had mine since Oct, but it seems to always have done it. Worse in cold weather

I assume your are referring more to the drone. Even if your exhaust is quiet your neighbors can feel/hear you creeping by. Its a big truck kind of sound.

Yeah, even pre-mod I have had comments on how my approach is given away by the subtle yet manly rumble of the cruiser's relatively low gearing.

That or you all have a hole in your exhaust system between the cats & the muffler.

Mine are both pretty quiet. The red one is so quiet at idle that its easy to forget that it is running.

I don't think it's an exaust hole, cause once it's warmed up its fairly quite at idle....it's more of a "drone" when your on the gas as described by jamisobe. I guess it's probably normal for a big truck.

Leaking exhausts have a fizzing sound. My truck is also very silent at idle.

Depending on your speed, it is probably very noticeable if you are climbing or pulling something.

take a look at the steering column seal at the firewall. It's a common thing on other Toyota trucks I've had and caused a lot of noise. I've changed the one on my 80 and didn't notice much improvement but it's worth doing since it's probably bad anyway.

Lift it and put on some MT's. It is clearly too quiet right now and you are hearing the gremlins. They get pissed when you don't take them wheeling

I've owned several trucks/SUVs, never thought the 80 was particularly loud.

even money on a leak between the cats or at the junction in the downtube in the exhaust. Both will make it louder but not too loud.

My dad and I chatted about this quite a bit. I have a 01 VW Passat and he has 07 Avalon. On certain roads our Cruisers are more quiet than the cars. His LX is almost always quieter. What we figured out was that it has to do with the road surface and how close you are to the resonating tires on rough or grooved pavement. So I don't think my Cruiser is overly loud. Go ride in a diesel pickup and get back in your Cruiser and you will be very happy.

How do you like your custom headers and flowmaster exhaust? Big difference in performance? I had an '86 Taco that i modded with LC Engineering Headers and flowmaster exhaust...just wondering if its worth it for my 95 LC???

I noticed a big improvement, but I also think the custom collectors contributed significantly. I have heard some say the headers they tried didn't offer any improvement.

I am convinced that the stock downtube design (similar to the original mass produced collector design that came with my headers - I tossed it in the trash) is an exhaust bottleneck. It is a very tight the way the tubes are ran to the outside of the frame which is why I suppose we don't see a better, free flowing design mass produced.

When you say custom headers, did you make them?

No. The headers were premade and they came with premade collector tubing. I pitched the collector tubing and had the collectors custom fabricated with mandrel tubing and a flowmaster y connector. The rest of the exhaust is also custom done with butt welded mandrel bends.
