What are CDL and why replace

Intersted in learning as much about this topic as I can, and not sure what they are?

I have a 97 40th #2650 Locked

CDL = Center Differential Lock.

Look at the top couple threads of the 80 series forum to find the sticky thread "FAQ for 80/LX450...", and then read through the "thinking of buying" links and the "general" links for tons of info, there is even a "diff lock for dummies" thread (cdl/center differential lock).
