Transmission fried

This is a true story that is going on as u read this;

This is the only case I know of where someone burned up his transmission. The cruiser is a 94-1FZJ80, mostly stock. Recently serviced, including the transmission (1000 miles ago).

A friend of mine (who is not on the mud forums) who owns said cruiser lives in the mountains of Colorado and has had tons of snow. He managed to get the beast stuck while trying to extricate his plow truck that he had just managed to get really stuck in a snow bank.

The cruiser, with lockers and 295 BFG's, would not go forward or backward, just sat there with spinning wheels in the icy snow. In the attempt to rock his way out of the ruts, he continually slammed the transmission from reverse to low. Well, he finally managed to wake up and use his winch to pull himself to a more tractable spot; only to find that the cruiser would work in reverse, but no go in any forward gear. Fluid (trans) smelled and was dark.

The lesson here is that u can mess up a bus tranny in our 80 series cruiser; an expensive lesson.

...

Meh - who serviced the transmission? I don't believe that you can take an otherwise healthy A442 to its knees with even a half hour of slamming fwd/rev. It was dying. He didn't mention his "Trans Temp" light coming on or you'd have mentioned it in your first post so he didn't overheat it in this incident. Meh.....

DougM;

Not sure if slee serviced tranny or not. I'm pretty sure he mentioned to me that no lights came on during the incident. He did have slee work on everything about 1000 miles back, and then he took a trip to CA and back with no probs. Cristo is going to put another tranny in next week, or check out. I know how my buddy gets when stuff doesn't work, he can be very unreasonable. U'd think a high temp light would have shown. He has only 135k miles on the rig. It drives in reverse of course, but very slow in fwd gear, has to rev it up to get it to move.

This is a weird incident; I just talked with him on the phone and there is a possibility that his fluid level was low. He only spent a few minutes with the gear shift fwd/rev , so that's why no lights showed up. Oh well, the slee group will figure it out next week. It may not be as serious as we had thought.

I could see a situation where he is slamming from forward to reverse time and time again and applying power before the tranny has time to build the proper fluid pressures (if you slam the tranny in reverse, it takes a second to relieve the pressure from the forward gears to engage reverse). This could cause the clutches to slip a lot and overheat without overheating the fluid.

Hmmm..........

Possible #1 shift solenoid or maybe he jacked up the neutral safety switch banging back and forth and the TCM can't tell what gear it's in.

Had a friend one time take his dad's forerunner out four wheeling one night in the mud only to get it stuck to the frame. Well, called a friend to come out to help and he drove a Z71 Chevy. Long story short he was doing the same thing you're talking about and had the trans fluid boiling out of the dip stick tube within a couple of minutes. Both of them came up to work wondering if my truck was there and if I could help. Got the forerunner out and towed the Z71 to the shop and pulled the trans. Burned the manual low clutches right out of that thing.

I've done the banging F/R thing in everything from a '68 Thunderbird to a 73 Fiat when I was a kid living in Michigan's snowbelt. Never had a tranny overheat. Side note in praise of Subarus: My 97 Legacy stated right in the manual that the drivetrain was designed to allow the owner to keep light pressure on the gas and shift F/R without letting up (!). Wonder how many warranties they had to pay over that sentence...

Anyhow, it's been my experience in snow that only a few F/Rs without getting free and you're sitting on the frame and the party's over. Keep spinning and in a few seconds more the tires are hardly touching. So, with that in mind, I'm thinking the abuse level was not too high and there's a preexisting situation. Hope no damage occurred from getting it home if indeed fluid was that low. Still no fun for anyone involved of course and I hope it turns out well for all.

I know this thread is really old but I have a similar problem only its intermittent. You put it in forward and it slips really bad, put it in reverse and it does OK. Pretty much without fail if I turn off the ignition and then re-start the truck it shift normally into forward. IT seems to do it more often lately so I am getting annoyed. Any suggestions on what to check? the PO took it in and Toy put an $800 transmission shift computer in it but it is obviously acting up still. It is a 240,000+ miles vehicle. Odo doesn't always work so maybe alot more.

I would start a new thread on this. My wild guess, maybe a tranny solenoid?

Today when I was pulling out of the lake I tried shifting it into 1st instead of "D". Low and behold it went into gear solidly. It seems that the problem only happens when in the "D" setting. Sound like some kind of sensor? I guess I need to pull out the schematic.

I am interested in your transmission. PM me your price if you read this. I have a spare tranny for my truck and a spare for the cruiser would be good. I don't think mine is bad but..
