First Post w/ Pics - tonneau cover

I've been smurfing around this forum for a while, soaking up as much 80 knowledge as possible. Figured I'd finally put up a post and say 'hey'.

I've had my '95 cruiser for little over 5 years now. Picked it up in Minnesota, had it in Wisconsin for a bit, and now we're in California (loved that drive!). It's pure white (best color IMO ) and mostly stock, no major mods (georges LEDs, cup holder, bilsteins...).

A bit after discovering this forum, I realized my cruiser was kinda unique in that it has a tonneau cover. After I bought it I didn't think much of it. I hadn't realized that few 80s have the covers.

Searching the forum I've only found one post that mentions tonneau covers. So attached are some pics of the cover in my rig.

You'll see that the pieces holding the cover in the back are gray vs. the oak interior. I have the original oak holders but they weren't very secure and I replaced them. CDan (you rock!) could only get gray as oak is not available any more.

I can't tell you all how helpful this forum has been and hopefully I'll be able to give some back!

Mike

I have never seen one before, but was surprised that they were not an option (that I knew of...). Did yours come with your LC?

Yep, it had the cover when I bought it. The cover and holders are all Toyota.

It is possible the PO had it installed, but from what I've heard and read, it would have been big $$ to swap out the side trim panels as they'd need to be replaced to work with the holders.

If Mr T priced them similar to the second gen 4Runner tonneaus ($800), Im sure they didn't exactly fly off the parts counters' shelves.

Looks like this one did have the third row seats- the bolt holes show on the wheel wells.

And sliding rear windows.........

My guess is it was some sort of dealer installed option. Only Dan can say for sure though.

Actually, its common knowledge that the Dark Green (Dark Emerald Pearl, 6M1) 80's are the best color.

Welcome!

Not to rain on the stock cover parade, but all that was needed to install that were the 4 attachments screwed on - not all new side panels - right? I suspect that's just a Toyota cargo cover from another model, or another market (most likely). Mot?

PS - X2 on the Emerald Green. Check the FAQ or do a search.

The green is also more expensive to insure because no body shop has ever been able to duplicate that Gawdawful color.

No 3rd row seats. The truck came w/o 'em.

I talked w/ Dan about this when I ordered the replacement holders as he was curious about the vehicle's history, and he mentioned that the side panels would have needed to be replaced. Where the bracket holds the cover, there's actually a notch in the panel and the bracket fastens up to metal rather than on top of the plastic.

MoGas, good call on the sliding glass. My understanding is that cruisers shipped w/ tonneau covers had solid glass, so I think you're right in that it was probably a dealer installed option.

Having the cover isn't bad, but personally I wouldn't have paid big $$ to have it vs the seats...

Ouch! Glad they didn't try to inflate my cost of the truck based on this!

That particular vehicle was originally built with third row seats and the seats were removed before you got the vehicle.

Original third-row-delete vehicles have smooth wheel wells, no striker wells in the floor, flat quarter glass and no privacy tint.
