| steam hissing sound with block heater? I know there is a block heater thread that isn't too old, but I thought a new thread was in order as this is now a possible problem question, rather than general discussion.
I've had a block heater on my 80 since I bought it new in '96 and I use it pretty regularly in the winter month(s). When poking my head around the engine bay recently while the block heater was plugged in, I noticed a fairly loud steam hissing sound. Its loud enough to hear standing next to the cruiser with the hood closed when the garage is silent at night.
I couldn't pinpoint the source of the sound. Any idea what is causing this and if it is normal?
I know, probably early warning that my HG is about to go . Maybe I'll just pull the engine and do a complete rebuild as PM

| The one in my Cummins gurgles a bit. I believe what you describe is normal.

| Mine does the same. Simply a boundary layer of water on the hot element that's near boiling. A pot of water on the stove makes the same sound before it boils. I think it's actually the sound of the tiny bubbles collapsing - a form of cavitation.

| I have had this sound from a number of vehicles with block heaters. The sound has ranged from having to open the hood to hear it, to hearing it from a couple of feet away. Has never been a problem.

| Thanks all for the comforting info (I guess I can sleep tonight )
I'm in the process of ordering a block heater from a Canadian on ebay - looks like the numbers match correctly as listed in the other block heater thread.
thanks again!
