RS3000 - Yes...I searched

Long question, hopefully a short sweet answer.

I have been reading and reading and reading <mostly beowulfs posts> and I am lead to believe that I "CAN" install a RS3000 alarm into my 1996 Toyota Landcruiser FZJ80 I6 SUV "Bruiser - CIVIC BAIN" using the factory installed "Dongle" that should be under the driver seat.

My belief is based on the idea that Lexies and Cruisers share the same harnesses.

What I want to do is rip out that TDS craptacular system that is hiding somewhere in the cruiser and install the RS3000 kit to allow me to lock the doors and unlock the doors with two seperate buttons (TDS has only ONE button) and if possible gain locking when key is turned to on or start (I read on here honest and possibly in another thread I started that this was standard on Lexies with RS3000.)

Could I be out of my mind, oh yeah....have I tried to read and understand the wiring schematic and the instruction manual on Beowulfs site...oh yeah...am I the best at wiring diagrams...oh...no...

For the record...I tried to search, I read all the recent posts and my own threads I started over again. I am back now with this new version of my same question.

NOW - If the above is a no go...is there a recommended system that would do the above mentioned things? I searched on crutchfield and a few other places and got what looks like sketchy gear for results. I am not ashamed to spend some money for something that will keep happy.

She is driving this now while I do my build up (make her love it....make her want to improve it....makes me happy.)

Before I end this...I just want to say how much I appreciate any feedback -good or bad. That is what makes this site GREAT!

Proven,
I do not believe the RS3000 is the alarm you want. It is better than the Theft Deterrent System (aka TDS) alarm but....

* The RS3000 FOB has 2 buttons. The purpose of the 2 buttons is to enable you to open 2 different cars (Toyotas with the RS3000 alarm installed.) One of the buttons can be programmed for Car-A, and the other can be programmed for Car-B. Most of us program both buttons for one vehicle but that just means the 2 buttons act the same. Press the button (either one) and the doors lock and the alarm is ON. Press the button (either one) and the doors unlock and the alarm is OFF.

My recommendation would be to study aftermarket alarms with a good dealer support base. Select the alarm and the dealer that will be around in 10 years. Get the features you want (e.g. Remote Start?)

I second the aftermarket route.

When i purchased my truck the PO had ripped "most" of the stock alarm system out and wired in some viper BS!! Then when he sold the truck, he ripped the rest of the viper crap out, so i had a mess.

I called cruiserparts.net and had an entire alarm/keyless system (RS3000) at my door within a week. Not knowing how to install it, i went to the stealership. They wanted to charge me $500 to install....add the $300 purchase price and i was pissed! So, cruiserparts.net being the great folks they are let me return the system with no restock fee!

I went to a local stereo place and they said they could install an alarm/keyless out the door for $175.

aftermarket is more versatile to do everything you want with a lot less headache.

That would be incorrect, the LX450 has its own wiring harness.

major portions of it are similar but it diffrences throuout even in the parts that are wired similar some of the connector names and wire colors are changed,

One diffrence is the LX450 has prewired plugs for the RS3000 in the drivers kick pannel where Land Cruiser does not.

Like -B- said the RS3000 is a single button setup.

My LX450 does lock the doors when you start and unlock them when the engine turns off as long as the door is closed, I am not sure if this function comes from the alarm or one of the other boxes of electronics.

The RS3000 is the most ill-engineered Toyota product/option I have ever seen. Even in Valet mode, it annoys me. Run, flee - to something else.

All I really want is remote unlocking, yet the panic button still works and if you remote unlock and only open the hatch, it relocks the other doors for you (thanks a lot) within 15 seconds. This is on a '98 4Runner. The one-button lock/unlock is annoying, too.

The RS3000 is a product of Fujitsu-TEN, not Toyota, though TMS-USA selected it as the alarm system for the US market.

About once a week I will leave the keys in my pocket while messing around in the garage and the fob will get "pressed" and set off the panic alarm. It did this last weekend while I was shoveling snow. Had to dig through the various layers of clothing to fish out the keys, unlock the truck with the keys, put the key in the ignition and turn it on/off/on to disarm the panic alarm.

The neighbors, wife, and several kids got a huge laugh out of this scene.

Another major annoyance of the RS3000 system is when you arm the system with the FOB and then you (or your wife) comes out a few days later and unlocks the driver door with the key, the alarm will sound. I have absolutely no idea why the RS3000 designers thought this is a good feature.

-B-, just to make your life easier:

you can disable panic mode by pressing the top remote button. No need to play with the ignition.

Also, what is the point of opening the car with keys, while you can simply press a button? I don't see any inconsistency here. If you have an alarm that locks/unlocks the doors, 99% of people no longer use the door locks. I use them once a year to make sure they work. Other than that I have not opened a door with the keys since 1998.

RS3000 is quite basic indeed, but hey, it is a design over a decade old, what do you expect. If you have no RS3000, there is no need to go for it (there are many other better systems), but if you have it, there is no need to change it either. Thieves know any system in any car (window stickers also help them a lot) and can disarm it in a matter of 60 seconds. All that counts as security in your vehicle are your 'personal' custom mods. I use a hidden switch connected directly to the fuel pump and also a hidden starter button (with relay of course), so even if I leave the keys in the car or somebody steals them, the car will not be started. In my 4runner, for example, I had to press a portion of the floor carpet (the switch button was hidden there) to start the engine.

Thank you for the replies, I was away on business and could not get to the forum through their "Websense" firewall.

Thank you for the flat input. Now I will start researching the aftermarket scene. Does anyone have suggestions for where I might start? warm-fuzzies count if the company is related to something you own.

I had a viper on my FJ62 that seemed to work pretty well. Lots of options, depending partly on what kind of fob you want. I think mine was a 350HV.

Click here for a good sample.
