What were the first signs? Need more info.
About all you can do is take the ABS sensor out and dip a stick down in there and see if anything gets on it.
What year, how many miles on it since last birf job.
Consensus on this site seems to be that you can pump some grease in there but the its not likely to actually get into the birf.
You do not want to over fill it either as that can blow out the axle seal.
When you do a repack you are supposed to pack it 3/4 full to allow for thermal expansion. If you do not know the history of the vehicle then plan a front axle repack.

I agree that if you have sings of failure you should plan on a repack. Adding more lube may prevent further damage, but if there is noise some damage has allready occured. There have been some test lately using differant colored greeses to see if lubeing through the fill hole does indeed get to the birfs, and in every case there was evidnence of that it does.

I did an axle job for another member who pumped grease into his knuckles. What a mess I'll see if I can find the thread.

Found it enjoy

You can pump greas into the knuckles till the cows come home and it will never get to the spindle bushings.

it sounds like metal on metal slowly turning making a sort of grinding sound. it only happens at speeds under 30mph. i had the same thing happen when i first bought the truck, but Koffer helped out by greasing the knuckles and zirks, which did help until now.

i plan to repack the birfs once i find someone to help! but for the short term, i'd like to get a little extra grease in areas mentioned to (i hope) help.

interestingly, the sound stopped the next day and hasn't made a peep since. regarless, i still want to lube my bitch up.

then.... tune up, phh, starter contacts ac recharge, flush radiator....
