In need of speaker advice

Hi, I have a 1991 TLC I picked up last Friday and the sound system is struggling. The CD unit doesn't work and the speakers are old yellow paper. By my count there are 10 (2 in dash, 2 in front doors, 2 in rear doors, 2 in rear panels, 2 in head liner above 3rd row seats).

1) can anyone confirm that there are 10 and 10 only?

2) does anyone know the exact sizes of all 10?

3) any suggestions about what I might want to replace them with?

once i make a decision on the speakers, I will upgrade the head unit and (possible) amps fittingly.

I am not a novice. My previous system in a Nissan Maxima had an Alpine headunit (with BBE) infinity kappa 4x6's and 6x9's powered by a 4 channel jbl amp. my subs were 3 JL12" W6s in a sealed box with a 1000 watt infinity beta digital switching amplifier. top of the line alternator, cables, wiring blocks, soldering job and 1 farad capacitor. I'm a little older now and don't want anything nearly as loud and probably don't want any subs this go around. But my main concern is quality.

Thanks!

Jon

Welcome. It is good you are not a novice. Do a quick search and you will find all the answers to the questions you have posed.

1) There are 9.
2) IIRC 4" lower dash, 5.25" doors, ~2" overhead 3rd row, ~6" 'subwoofer' in rear quarter.
3) Search. Lots of people have lots of different answers to this.

I'm still on the stock sound system. Yes, I plan to upgrade it after I'm done with the outside mods that I have stacked up.

Too many mod ideas, not enough time.

If you upgrade the headunit you will need to bypass the factory amps and use the other harness. That takes you down to 4 speakers (the 4 in the doors). Unless of course you want to run your own wires.

I'm running 6.5" speakers in all 4 doors. You will find the front grills require a shallow speaker. I just removed the grills and used the aftermarket grills on top. I put a 1/2" spacer in the rear doors to space it out. Sounds much better than stock.
