Replacing Alarm?

I have a 1993 FJZ80 with an alarm/remote system that I believe is aftermarket. I am down to one functioning key fob-- and it does not seem to working very well.

I don't know anything about the alarm I have, except that I don't think it is OEM. It has remotes that say "United States Auto Security" and an FCC ID of H5LAL777A.

I have tried to find replacement key fobs, but the web sites always ask for a code that is supposed to be on a white label inside the remote. There is no such label in either of my remotes.

Here is an example

http://www.autotechs.com/items/item172.htm

So now I am thinking I should just replace the whole alarm and remote system. It seems like I can get a whole system for pretty close to the cost of two replacement remotes for my old system.

Does anybody have any recommendations for replacements? What brand? Where to buy from?

I don't need anything fancy. Just a simple alarm and door lock/unlocks.

Do I need to find out more about the system I have? Where would it be located on the vehicle?

Thanks

Jared

My advice is to replace what you have with a new system from DEI. Some of their brand names are Viper, Python and Clifford as well as others. They make many models from simple to complex as will most certainly still be around when you're once again down to one failing remote.

I did a quick search for Viper Alarms. I found a bunch of sale, but I have no idea what I am looking for. Will any alarm work in any vehicle, or will I have to find a specific type of alarm?

Also, are there any good online dealers out there? I tried Crutchfield, but I did not see much online help in how to select an alarm.

From your avitar it looks like you live in snow/cold. If you are getting a new alarm you may want to get a combo remote start/alarm. Most of the DEI alarm companies make combo alarm/remote starts.

Jared,
The "code" that they are referring to is the FCC ID.

Have you tried calling these guys:

The picture is deceptive. I actually live in Arizona, and don't really have "cold" issues.

I do have "hot" issues though--- and a remote start would be nice to get the AC moving on those hot days.

But I really don't need it that much. I don't think I would pay extra for it, and it seems like it would be a more complicated install.

I don't thinks so-- the remotes unlimited website was pretty clear. You enter the FCC ID, and they tell you to open it up and look for the code. The code is the actual combination, and would have to be different for different vehicles.

No, but that is not a bad idea. Maybe they can tell me how to figure out the code without having the paper.
