on both my daughters and my Camry I use a 3 step plastic polish on the lenses. HUGE difference in output once that yellow stain is removed.

Before with the stock "white" headlight bulbs on low beam

After with the HIR headlight bulbs on low beam

The two pictures were taken with the same D-SLR set to manual over-ride with the same shutter speed, aperature, and ISO settings.

Ok now... for this Question. I have known about the HIR's for some time now. They are pretty popular in some of the Subaru circles. A set for my 80 with everything said and done are going to run me about 64 bucks.

I did how ever find a complete OEM set of Lexus HID lights. Its the bulbs, ballast, wiring, etc. They work prefectly and would run me about 75 bucks.

Im leaning to the HID's. But not sure if they would be of any benefit over brand new HIR bulbs that I wont need to worry about the bulbs or ballasts burning out (being they are used parts). And I dont have the HID projectors.

MiniPigg,

If you don't mind the installation part with the HID, don't care if you potentially blind on-coming traffic, don't mind neither not minding coughing up the $$($) when it comes to replacing one of the components if it/they fail, and don't mind possibly blinding yourself in a snow/rain storm at night, then I'd say go for the HID's! As far as the sheer output the HID's would be brighter than HIR's (Not too much though, according to Cary's info.)

And lastly, it might be just illegal to do such (HID) conversion on stock/halogen reflectors. Check locally!

Good luck!!

The PO of the 80 took out the OEM headlamps and put some after market headlamps.

I think the HIRs in both Hi and Low beams are so bright that you will not need any more than this, so why mess with all the HID stuff.

I was amazed at how much light they put out.

On a side note a wiring upgrade such as slee sells or DIY helps too.

X2 on all of the above.

I put the Slee harness in first, then got the bulbs 6 months later. With the 4 HIRs across the front the lighting is the best of any stock vehicle I have been in (obviously a bit of personal judgement, but others have commented on how bright my lights are). I wouldn't go through all the hassle of trying to retrofit HIDs when theses HIRs are a much easier step towards brighter light. This was one of those mods that I did and started kicking myself for not doing it earlier

This headlamp is ok for now. I am not happy with plastic lenses. But I will get the aftermarket plastic covers with hopes it will help keep them from scratching to much.

Now it has te high and lofe beams. You can see the Eagle Eye rings (these are eagle eye headlamps), and that lower center bulb is an extra driving lamp that uses the same bulb as the high beams. That round silver thing in the upper middle.. doesnt do anything and it not made for anything on these... but you could make it like others and put an amber bulb in that spot.

All in all they put out a decent pattern and are bright with regular bulbs. I am going to go ahead and do the HIR bulbs all around.

To bad they arent 12 bucks each like they were in the beginning of this post.

Wow, this thread is old!

I want to comment on the brightness of the HIRs... I still can't get over it!

I would not have added my Hella 4000s to the front had I known the HIRs would be so bright. You can still tell when the hella lights are on, but it's not that much brighter than the HIRs. I guess I could go to 100w bulbs in the Hellas but how much does a person need anyway. I think it's the best bang for the buck of any mod i've done.

I got mine from this guy. He was very fast and knew a lot about bulbs.

HIR Headlights 9011 9012 bulbs

I installed them tonight but im not to impressed. I mean they are brighter but not much better. It could be because on of my lenses has a rock chip hole and it has a little moisture inside and is causing the drivers side to have a more diffused light. looks like i need to find a replacement drivers side light.

Any one ever try to install hid's as high beams? I know that they dont really liked to be turned off and on much without cooling down, but it seems they could potently be very bright.

OK.... Just tried to order the JD partnumber AH211917 for the bulbs and they said they were discontinued.

Does anyone know what the new part numbers are for the JD HIR Low and HIR High beam bulbs?

Just ordered a Slee harness and look forward to actually being able to see at night....

These are just awesome! Great bang for the buck!

I just picked up the JD HIR low beam bulbs (AH211917) and installed them in my 1997 cruiser a few minutes ago. It took about 15 minutes in total for the trimming I had to do on the top tab of each bulb. No Dremmel... just used wire cutters. I paid $30 each plus shipping at my local JD dealer. It took about 3 days for the special order to go through an then they were ready for me to pick up.

My stock headlights were yellow and dim, now they are white and bright! I'm a huge John Deere fan now! Thanks to IH8Hud too!!!!

How many AH211917 did you need to purchase? (does this p/n come with 2 bulbs?)

how much does the slee harness help in addition to HIR bulbs? I have the highs and lows installed, and damn, they are much better thank stock. Will the slee harness make a significant improvement? i have heard some bad stories about the harness (though forum seems to suggest the more recent ones have gotten better)

I purchased 2 bulbs (John Deere part number AH211917) for $30 each. It cost me $66 in total with $6 added for shipping to the local JD store.

I have a stock wiring harness which seems fine. I might upgrade to the Slee harness, but since my passenger side headlight is a little foggy on the inside, I think I'm going to replace this with new stock first.

Awesome NLX, I am gonna go dig through your thread now.

Rambling - are there some foglights out there that that will accept a 9005/6 bulb (foglights that you can buy without bulbs included?) I think throwing a set of HIR high beams (or maybe low beams? dunno) into a set of fog lights would be a good price-performance compromise.

great thread NLX, I book marked it in my 'to do' folder along the CDL, 7pin, spare tire mod and some other stuff lol.

now that you have had the harness for awhile, have you noticed any of reliability issues others have mentioned around here?

To be honest the reliability issue was mainly with the first version from everything I've read. I have had no problems whatsoever with mine. I have helped a few people install theirs, either over the phone or in person and I have found an instance or two, don't remember now, where there was an assembly issue from the manufacturer but Slee took care of those to my knowledge. No issues I've heard of since.

Good to know. Sounds nice to pump out a few more lumens for 40 bucks. prolly leave the old wiring intact

Aftermarket headlamps

I was wondering if those headlamps use the stock 80 9006/9005 head lights? They look sweet and may want to get a pair.

Thank you!
