Second belt location

Hi, I can see on the pulleys in my 96 LX450 that you can put second belt. Why is it there? Am I supposed to have two serpentine belts?

There are supposed to be two belts.

They are not serpentine belts but rather V belts. The purpose is to allow you to continue on if you lose one belt.

If you are referring to the belts on the alternator, they come in pairs and it is HIGHLY recommended you buy them as a pair from Toyota. List is around $15 for the pair IIRC.

x2, buy the matched OEM set of v belts, do not get aftermarket belts as they are ribbed and loud, and not matched.

If you have the time and other stuff to buy, give Dan a call and have them sent over.

I've had good luck with Gates belts and Goodyear belts. I've never broken one of them.

Your FZJ80 Land Cruiser/Lexus LX 450 should have three belts. The two interior ones should BOTH be there. Whoever put your belts on last was a Lazy SOB and didn't do it right. That 2nd one isn't a failover/redundancy. You're using them to turn a lot of high torque stuff. A single belt would potentially slip and break very prematurely.

Matched set? Modern manufactured belts are so close in specs within a make & size that you'll stretch them to match when you tighten them. Match the brand and age between the two though.

As for the poor belt thats been doing the job of 2 all this time... Chuck it and replace it with twins.

The outer belt... That one can be an odd dog and hard to source. Cary a spare set of 3 or keep a spare set in the garage. Belts, hoses, clamps, full size inflated spare tire, oil changes... Cheap insurance.

No, not replace one and install a second one. You're installing three new belts. The one that was running solo needs to be deposited in your local landfill.

I'll second the opinion that matched belts are a necessity. Not two from the same AutoZone, nor even two with similar numbers. Two matched belts, cut from the same stock. Those and thermostats I will never buy anywhere but the Toyota dealer.

You may have only one belt because the other one broke.

The poor guy is going to be going to a parts counter asking for special matched belts.

Make sure the belt brand and part number are the same. Use the number and brand on the belt itself not the cardboard sleeve. You should be fine.

That's how they come at any Toyota dealer.

I disagree, just go to a Toyota dealer, any aftermarket belts will be noticeably loud, as they are all ribbed.

All he has to do is ask for the belts for an 80 series LC. The parts guy will tell him that model comes with 2 belts, and will hand him 2 packages. In one package will be two belts, tied together, and the A/C belt will be in the other package. Not all that difficult. The belts for the alternator/fan are sold as a matched pair, one part number. It's really not that difficult.

I belt running two belts can let you use less tension which would seem like a good thing.

The PO of mine had put on gates belts and although they are good belts they make a lot of noise. Switched to OEM - toyota and much happier.

Work will be done at a local Lexus Dealer.
I will tell them about the belts as advised.
