Does Speed Sensor Help Run the Odometer, Speedometer and Tripmeter

The Odometer, Speedometer and Tripmeter just quit on me today. I have a flashing "OD off" light which indicates some type of fault. One of the trouble codes is a possible faulty speed sensor. Could this, the speed sensor, possibly be the culprit?

Also, to pull the trouble codes the FSM mentions using an "SST" to connect terminals. What is the SST? Could I use a paperclip?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just finished pulling the tranny trouble code. (I used a paperclip.)

The code number is: 42 - Defective No. 1 vehicle speed sensor (in combination meter)- severed wire harness or short.

Now, where the heck is the No. 1 speed sensor? What does "in the combination meter" mean?????

The speed sensor is on the transfercase at the rear driveshaft output. The combo meter is the gauges in the dash, and yes if the sensor goes bad it will throw that code and do what yours is doing.

I just fixed this problem on my cruiser. The No. 1 VSS is in the combination meter. You need a new guage cluster or have your speedometer repaired. I replaced mine with a used one from CruiserParts.net. The speed sensor on the transfer case is No. 2 VSS and will throw a different code.
