I have done little to no service to the 80 for over a year and a half
other than oil changes.

I guess I should grease the drive line.
The u-joints were new several years ago.
I had the plugged yoke problem that caused the t-case to overheat (didn't know that at the time and replace the t-case thinking it was the problem).

Is there a safe way to get the 80 on a diet of grease again?

How can you tell if you have a plugged yoke?

I 'forgot' to grease my front upper u joint for about 2 years. It broke while on the freeway doing 80 MPH. Not fun. It didn't completely let go of the shaft, but I had to ride home with a terriable vibration!

I just ordered replacement ujoint for my front DS. Little wallowed, PMing it.

I am going to have the whole front shaft R&Red when I do that bit.

Drive shaft grease is something I am not very diligent about.
I think they are supposed to get a squirt or two every 10k

Grease all 4 unis and the 2 slip joints every LOF.

What is LOF?

I do it every oil change-5,000 miles or any time I've been in any water at all.

Lube-Oil-Filter.

The term has been used about 1,000 times here in the 80-Section for the past 5 years.

fawkin' newbies.

j/k :D

LOF

Lube, Oil, Filter......the lube part..

Damn, B beat me to it

Kurt,
Andrew is exempt but you have no excuse for asking this dumb question. Same question asked and answered (by C-Dan no less) just a short 30 months ago.

:flipoff2:

BTW, you still owe me 1 million US American dollars.

How the hell am I to remember somethging 30 months ago?
I don't remember asking that question BUT I did search LOF and found that it stands for before I posted. I did know that LOF was Libby Owens Ford:D
LOF stands for http://www.lethaloldfarts.net/intro.asp
It has a cool intro.

suppose to lube those every oil change?

I pulled both shafts lubed the joints and cleaned and lubed the splines only 30K miles or so ago

guess I should lube the U-joints next LOF

Wow, I've been here a long time and I've never heard the term LOF that I can recall.

I don't believe my driveshafts have received any love since I've owned the truck. That's been oh about 2 years and 50k miles. I was always afraid to grease them because of the plugged yoke issue. ;p

plugged yoke?

you guys talking about the issues with hydraulic lock on the slip spline? if so yes do not lube the slip spline on the truck but the u-joints can be lubed all you want no harm. its just getting on the zerks of the U-joints that is difficult.

I'm a LOT older than you are and *I* remembered it. And you were the one that asked the question! :D

What does "LOT" stand for:confused: Last offer terminated?

As for plugged yoke,
I know when my yoke is greasing freely, it spits grease on the muffler.
If you grease and don't see any grease flinging out on the muffler of area around the yoke, you MUST remove and clean the yoke.

I should of known there was a problem when t-case was overheating.
I was new to the 80 and was happy with the grease gun but wondered where all the grease went when I pumped it in the yoke???
I found out where it went, it turned into a very $$$$ hydro-ram:crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

Lubing Card, Sheet, etc

Anybody got a sheet, card, etc that shows all the parts that need lubing. My Runner had a card showing all the points. Someone told me there was a part that you could overlube also. Which part would that be?

Thanks
SS

There are grease zirks on the 4 unis and the 2 slip joints on the drive shafts. When greasing the slip joints, you should pump grease until the joint begins to move, then stop. If you overfill, it cannot "slip" and becomes a battering ram whenever you hit a bump and can damage the transfer case.

Some people squirt moly grease into the back of the knuckle. There is a square plug on top of the knuckle housing. (See cut-away view in the Front Axle Service FAQ.)

I disagree, I do not think the slip spline can be safely lubed on the vehicle,

If the seals are in good shape and you fill it until it move you have just made the drive shaft un-compressible. next time you stuff an axle on an obstacle or a bump there is going to be a lot of force on the transfer case and pinion because the drive shaft will not shorten like it is suppose to.
