Help with antenna, power seats

Just got my first cruiser, a '97, which came with a few problems. The power seats work in every direction EXCEPT forward and backward. They seem to want to move along one track but not the other, causing a bind which results in the seat going nowhere. Is this a motor problem or a gear problem?

My power antenna is also broken. The motor seems to run, but the mast is definitely gone. I was thinking about replacing this with a rubber stubby from autozone, maybe even one with a signal booster for $17 bucks. Looks easy to do. Any thoughts?

Also need an owner's manual as mine did not come with one. Does anyone know where to get one. And how about a repair manual for doing work yourself? I've noticed there are several brands, can you recommend one?

Looking forward to getting this baby in shape and taking from new orleans to cental america at the end of the year. Many thanks for any help!

Welcome to the MUD..
The antenna mast and FSM can be purchased from C-dan (American toyota), see the vendor list, or you can by a mast on on Ebay with instructions (just do a search). The factory manual is best but costly.

The problem is that you have probably lost the two white plastic screw caps at the end of the horizontal shaft at the front of the seat frame. The second alternative is that the plastic gears may be stripped and you'll nees to replace them but you have to buy the entire gear box Housing sub-assembly 72206-30040. You can't but teh plastic screws if they are missing. Look around the PO may have found them then put them in the console, glove box, door pocket, they're still under the seat, who knopws. Do a search for "power seats" or "electric seats" and you'll see many threads on this subject. Good luck.

Order the Factory Service Manual (FSM) from Cruiser Dan. There are three volumes one general volume covers almost everything, one covers the body and the third is electrical manual. You can do a lot yourself.

Thanks for the advice LCphil. I missed exactly what you said about the white screw caps though. Is it possible to get replacements if they're missing?

Look at the ads at the top for CDan, he also posts here.

The screw caps are tricky. I am missing one on my DS seat and I am trying to source/improvise a fix. If I come up with something I will let you know

Look in the vendors forum section for cruiserdan or American Toyota, he is a member here on the forum. Pricing is way cheaper than local dealers, and he sells all OEM parts.

As far as I know you cannot buy the screw caps separately. You can try a wrecking yard, but they probably wouldn't want to part with them.

If anyone's interested I could probably get them copied here in aluminum for little money. But hopefully there isn't much demand.

Check first if they are missing open either front door and looking from the side look under the front of the seat you will see a white plastic cap with a flat screw head in it. If you don't then they are probably missing.

In any case let us all know what you find and how you resolve this. Don't leave us hanging.
