Roof rack, LineX, whole or part?

1996 FZJ80 Moonglow truck 125,000 mi factory roofrack & spoiler.

I'm going to remove the roof rack in the next week or two, plug the holes with allen head screws and have the holes covered over in LineX. This part is decided.

I have two options on how to have the LineX done:

A.) Black LineX covering the holes like:
The roof is Line-X'd !!
Thats just where the bars were, in black, stealing his idea 100% plus an extra two vertical stripes on the hatch door to cover the holes from the spoiler.

B.) Color matched to Moonglow grey LineX over the whole roof. Sunroof taped off of course. Going around at the drip rail level, hatch down to the start of the glass and down the painted portion of the A and D pillars.

B is 3X the cost of A. I will post back to this thread with the results & pics once it is done either way. The budget is there. I need to figure out what if any disadvantages there are to doing things one way or the other.

So, what are the opinions? Should I add 3 lbs or 30 lbs of coating to the roof?

I'd do just black strips.

That's a lot of line-x if you do the entire thing. I dont' see any advantage to doing that if the rest of your roof is rust free.

do the whole thing... color match it... I think black would look good but absorb a lot of extra heat in the sumer months... as a bonus you won't have to worry about hail damage... (well except for the hood and sunroof) good luck and post pics when you are finished.

and in Omaha you know hail damage is just a matter of time... are you gonna get this done at the Harrison st. line-x place??

There is a guy by the name of Tyler on mud who did this with line-x. His cruiser is moonglow as well. Too bad you can't put white line-x would be much cooler in the summer.

That is actually something I thought about too. It would be cooler. It would also look like a daddy FJ Cruiser. Not such a bad thing.

From what I could see they can do any color. He had samples running through the rainbow.

How the color matching works is that they will LineX it with one of 16 or so different colors of LineX product. The color coat then goes on over the top of it. They claim that the color coat is mixed to perfectly match whatever you like. However, if the LineX is gouged hard, the underlying material may show through a bit.

I suppose that is the third option.

C. LineX the whole roof in another color. White has been suggested *TY Sr.Gringo*. Other possibilities range from grey without color coat, red, blue, yellow, brown, green...

If you've got the dough, do whole roof black, white, or color match. I'd choose color match first, have him do a small patch to see how it turns out first.

With the thickness possible of the line-x stuff and its insulating properties, black would only be hotter to the touch, not on the inside of the vehicle.

Just a quick follow up since I got a PM on this one. The stainless steel screws I used to plug the threaded nutserts left when I took off the rack:

McMaster Carr part number: 91313A145
Metric Knurled Cup Point Socket Set Screw 18-8 Stainless Steel, M5 Thread, 6 mm Length, Packs of 25
$8.57

I ended up doing the entire roof in Line-X color matched. Nearly 3 years later it still looks great.

Strips - but I'm somewhat bias as I did exactly what Tyler did! Black durabak strips on a white truck. Looked good w/o the INTI rack. It's covered up with the INTI now.

I'd do it the same way given the options again.

Here's my write up:

Flare/Roof Durabak Project Complete!

I can't say I am a fan of the strips that are shaped like a boomerang on the outside. That being said I would certainly experiment with different ideas that would save the $$$ required to do the entire roof.

Just my .02
