The radio band frequencies used in Japan are different than those in North America; there is some overlap, but most people end up replacing their JDM units. It was fun listening to American pop in Japanese on the mini disk that came with the unit for a while, but I've had enough of it now.

Which years of US market 80 Series stock radios will plug in to a 1990 JDM HDJ81?
When did the US market 80 Series stock radios start coming with CD players?

Not sure about plug and play but I have a stock FZJ80 double din unit you can have for cheep. I recently replaced it with a Rockford Fosgate single DIN and installed the factory dash pocket.
In case anyone is wondering.. the system still sounds like the drive through speaker at Mcdonalds.
Next on the list is speakers and adding Longduck's Sub.
