Gear Setup issues

Ok a little back story first.. This is my roomates truck, He had a Freind of his install 5.29 Gears and a Detroit into his 4 cyl 3rd.. This is the 4th time he has taken everything apart! I warend him that gear installs needed to be perfect

So Here is how it looks.. The gear faces have strange lines on them, not shiny and smoth like they should be.. The gear contact is only about a 1/8th inch by 1/2 inch and its far out on one side, and in on the other.. Im thinking that these gears are shot! dosent look good, but wanting some more insite before i let him know he is $300 out for a new gear set/install kit..

More info would help:

Brand of gears, amount of shim, backlash, etc.

You can also look on Zuk's page for patterns: http://www.gearinstalls.com/

Here's a great page from Randy's: http://www.randysringandpinion.com/d...koninstman.pdf

My pattern was kinda meh too, I played w/ a million shim and backlash combos, sometimes you can't get it perfect. Haven't tried it yet.

First-

You DO NOT need to use that much marking paint....a light coat on both sides of the teeth will be more than fine.

That contact pattern is not good.

Grab your FSM. It will show you with arrows, and not words which people often confuse, which way to move the gears.

Pinion need to move towards the carrier of the ring gear, and the ring gear will need to move away from the pinion.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help fellas.

Like i said, i did not set these up myself.. i told my roomate i was not confident in my abilitys to do a good job..

They are Yukon gears.. thats about all i know.. ill try and convince the guy they still aint right..

My Gears in my truck where a used set, all i did was toss in a new bearing, old one was jacked, and it ran a good pattern.

Poser is right, there's WAAAAY too much marking compound on there to really see what's going on. You only need a ligh coating, then spin the gears several times in both directions. holding the pinion flange so it makes a good impression into the grease. Should look something like this:

I also agree that the pattern you show is bad. Not sure if it's salvagable, I need to see it clearer.

How much pinion depth shim did you have?

Looks way too deep. You need to subtract probably 0.040" pinion depth shim. What pinion bearing are you running? What is the thickness of your pinion head? There are two, one is about 1 5/8 and one is about 1 1/2".
