Inclinometer

Has anyone ever seen one of these in a LC?

http://cgi.ebay.com/TOYOTA-PICKUP-TR...QQcmdZViewItem

I thought it might be an interesting toy if it would work.

I had one like that in my 4runner, but it had an altimiter on the left. The altimiter was the only part I ever looked at. Whenever people got in they asked what it is and the thought it was cool. I wouldn't get one for my LC, but that's just me.

I just scored a Prado-OEM digital unit from ebay a few days ago. It's on it's way. Will post pics once it is installed and functioning. It's a compass, trip-meter, and inclinometer.

These come on the Prado VX 96-02

I like the look of that one. I look forward to seeing it installed.

I saw the OEM write-up and decided against it. If CDan thinks it's a PITA, it's gotta be ugly to install.

You mind mentioning how much you paid for that? Is it a self contained unit or are there remote sensors?

I forgot to mention this. The unit also has a termometer, so yes It does have sensors, i believe it also connects to the ECU for the trip meter (I could be wrong). According to a friend who already did the same upgrade, the Prado comes with the sensors and connectors from the factory, even the ones not fitted with the unit, the connectors are behind the radio, so it's a plug and play deal. Drill 2 holes, plug and install.

Auction started at $49.99 and I won it for $72.00

I'll start a thread when I get it. It's coming from Mongolia to the US, and then to Chile, so I'm a little nervous and very anxious to get it.

I've done several of these:

http://www.geocities.com/toyotashawn/85clinometer.html

That E-bay seller "partsmaster" makes me a bit nervous. He used to pawn off those Tercel gauges as genuine truck/4runner units. At first I figured he maybe didn't know, so I sent him a message. He did know but didn't seem to care. I sent a note to one of his auction winners and they had no idea that what they just bought would not fit directly into a pickup/4runner without some work. I don't know if that person completed the transaction, but I felt obligated to make sure they knew what they were buying.

The Tercel 4x4 gauge sets are similar to the factory truck/4runner units found in the '84-'88 body styles, with a couple differences. The tercel has a 4WD dummy light to indicate if you're in 2wd or 4WD, and then there are the two clinometer gauges to the right. The slope of the dash in a tercel is a bit goofy, and some trimming of the vinyl cover must be done to fit, and a custom mount will need to be made (or find the original mount from a truck/4runner). I also had to remove and spin the front-to-back gauge because of how the gauge sits at a funny angle in the Tercel as compared to a truck/4Runner or anything else with a relatively flat and horizontal upper dash surface.

Meanwhile, the OEM 1984-1988 style truck/4Runner version of this gauge set has an altimeter instead of the dummy 4WD light, plus the two clinometer gauges. The slope/shape of the truck/4runner dash is different, therefore the vinyl cover is different than the Tercel's. However, the actual gauge housing is the same.

Both units do not need power to function, but both do have a simple 2 wire backlight illumination (power/ground) that can be hooked up.

I do not know how the guages would fit onto a Land Cruiser dash, but it is something I will be looking in to. I technically don't pick up my '96 LC until this saturday (and it's the first one I will have ever owned).

With some creativity, these units could be made to fit into a LC or any other vehicle. I've seen gauge sets from newer style 1990-1995 4Runners on Ebay straight from Japan, but the slope of the dash is backwards since they are right-hand drive, and slope of the cover on these is a bit goofy.

I have to admit, I've never seen this digital version so I can't compare the difficulty of installation. I know I could get a 1984-1988 truck/4Runner gauge to fit the dash of my newly aquired '96 LC, though I don't know if I will retain the OEM vinyl cover for it. Wiring the backlighting would be a sinch but is of course optional. The worst part would be ripping the dash apart to install a mounting bracket from the underside.

The clinometer guage pictured on my website is the Tercel 4x4 version of which I trimmed the cover, painted it black, and spun one of the gauge pictures as mentioned in the write-up. I have since replaced the gauge set with an OEM truck/4runner unit with the Altimeter. I live in a hilly city so it's a bit interesting to see the elevation changes (this was installed long before handheld GPS units were cheap). The tilt gauges are interesting, though acceleration/deceleration and corning will throw them off. People do ask a lot of questions though (do you fly in this thing?)

I've thought about trying to mount the 4runner version under the dash, at the back of the tranny console. On my 94, I don't think it will mount well on the dash because it's mostly curves. I'll probably have to scrap the cover and fab something to cover the sides. I know it's more bling/novelty than practical, but I think it might be kind of fun. Of course, in Illinois, the altimeter will read a constant zero.

Question

I just bought one of the digital inclinometers from a Prado as seen in the pics above. I'm going to put it on my 98' Tacoma but need a wiring schematic if anyone can get me that info. I would DEEPLY appreciate any info I can get to make this work on my truck. If anyone has done this swap PLEASE post up with info. Also I was reading above and they mention additional sensors needed. What, where and how do I get them IF I need them.

Thanks in advance!!!!

was in th e badlands with a buddy last weekend, he had one in his 4runner. Factory best I could tell, funny part was the thing stops at 30 degrees. We went past 30 and it has an internal stop. (incline)

When in doubt, ask Roger Brown...

You can modify the factory clinometer to go beyond 30 degrees.

No need for a clinometer since the pucker factor is the best way to tell if you're in trouble. Well at least for those of us who are worried.

Question

So.......Is there anyone that can get their hands on a wiring diagram/schematic for the Prado Inclinometer? I'm drawing dead with Toyota USA, so I'm guessing I'll have more luck with someone overseas that is in a country that sells the Prado.

Thanks

Figured I'd pull this dead thread up to see if anyone has done this in a FZJ80.
I recently got a Tercel Inclinometer off FleaBay for a whopping $6.00 (couldn't pass that up). I had one in my '89 4Runner a few years ago but I didn't want a second altimeter to the one in my overhaed console...
So the Tercel will work out perfectly for me except I need a 4Runner housing for it. Does anybody have a housing they want to part with?

Truthfully, I don't see that it's worth the effort. I had one of those things in my '85 4Runner, it was hopelessy innacurate. A GPS will be a much better altimeter.
