Timing Chain Cover Question

The timing chain on my 22RE broke a couple weeks ago. After inspecting with the valve cover off, I decided the inside of the valve cover looked good, and didn't need to be replaced. However, today I pulled the cover and found the bottom lip around the crank gear was broken-off. Should I put this project on hold and replace this timing cover, or can I still use this cover?

I'm sure Toyota put that lip there for a reason, bit I wanna get my truck back on the road...

Also, the chain didn't eat too much around the water pump.

Oriellys can get them for the newer blocks. Take yours in to match it up though. I forget how much they cost, but they dont have the older style blocks. Being as your is a 22RE you should be fine.

Did you have to loosen the head bolts to pull the cover? I'm trying to pull mine to inspect it and it's not coming off with all the front cover bolts + crank pulley + water pump removed.

No you don't have to. But there are a couple of bolts that come in from the back side, did you get those? You can see them in his second pic.

Ya, then there's the infamous hidden top bolt, it sits under a puddle of oil just inside the head.

I remembered teh hidden bolt from 20 years ago working on my 20R! I pulled the two on the water pipe, but I'm not sure I got the one just below it. Thanks!

I removed the head, but only because my valves were smashed to poo from the timing chain breaking.

I didn't make as much progress today as I woulda liked, so I might as well order another cover.... Thanks for the advise, everyone.

If you don't take the oil pan off there's a very good chance the cover will leak when you slide it back in between the 2....

That makes sense. The pan is out. I did the "differential drop" method of getting it out. It wasn't really a big deal, but Lingo was helping me. I didn't think jacking up the drivetrain would gain enough clearance.

The oil pan should be an issue if he has the head off to check valves.

You're going to want to pull the oil pan off anyway because those missing pieces had to go somewhere. You better find them before they become an issues later.

If you try to install the chain in a; pan, chain, timing cover, head, camshaft order it's a royal pain because you are trying to pry the chain up to get around the cam sprocket, and you can not easily reach down and compress the tensioner.

The head and cam need to be on, then the chain, then the cover, then the pan.

I guess you are right, I have done a head gasket before without removing the timing cover. It was a PITA to compress the tensioner when putting the cam gear back on. It probably wasn't good on the chain either.

I changed the time chain on a 22RE a couple of years ago and found that same lip broken like your's is. I replaced everything except the timing cover since it wasn't the issue in the first place. I never had a problem with it. That being said, I would still recommend you replace the timing cover. I just had to get the truck back up again on a weekend.

i have done a few head gaskets with the timing cover on, all you need is a long screw driver and maybe a flashlight and it ain't that bad.

It was hard for me to get the timing gear and chain on with one hand while prying on the tensioner with the other. Probably would have been easier if I had another hand.

i have not had a problem with it. use one hand to pull up on the gear and the other one to pry over the tensioner.

i wouldnt use it casue best i can figure that fin is there for proper oil pick up. you know cause the top end oil supply is fed from that chain

Oil pickup? There's no way the oil level is that high, you'd have to have 10 quarts in there! I think the fin is there to help hold the chain on the crank sprocket while you are messing with the upper end, IE doing the headgasket... or changing the valve timing because some Yahoo got it a tooth off.

well your right, but it seems like it would keep a good amount of oil *on* the chain. and with out it, a lot would sling off around that bend

Hmmmm.... Maybe, but I doubt the fin is close enough to keep oil on the chain... It would have to be pretty tight... There's plenty of oil pouring down the chain hole... So much in fact, that if you plug the rear drain hole in the head, and drive up a hill it floods the valve train and you get lots of smoke pouring out the exhaust... Ask me how I know?

hehehehe i know your right.

well either way i wouldnt use that cover. but those crazy japs have pulled that stunt before...
like why are these arrows on the oil pump? whats this single wire connector for in the middle of my harness? where is the bolt that is preventing me from taking off this timing cover....

it could be there just to keep oil from slinging up the cover,
