There is a big difference between an 84 and an 86. An 84 will be carburated and have a solid front axle. The 86 will be fuel injected and have IFS.

31's, maybe 32's is all you can fit without changing anything.

The engine will not be 4.2 either...it's a 22r or 22re...depending on the years as Toyminator states...a 4 banger...84 or 85 is one of the more favorable years...the others are ok depending on what suspension you want.

With the engine I would look for water in the oil mainly and yes the front axles...but as you know a clicking burfield only means it's time for long fields or something equivalent...that's how I approach my wife when it's time to replace something

They are pretty stout trucks otherwise..nothing else to watch for other than abnormal abuse. Good luck!

Oh and IFS! I've had about half a dozen of these ..look for broken stops and cracking a arms, torn or loose ball joints...just remember a binding noise while taking a sharp u-turn is normal..it's the steering stops usually and nothing to worry about.

Broken stops and cracking A arms? What have you been doing to your poor trucks! Mine has 312k on it, and I wheel it pretty good, and there's nothing wrong with the front end, nor have I ever heard of a broken stop or cracked arm....

Check for torn CV boots and idler arm bushings on the IFS. 84 and 85 4Runners were solid axle, 84 was carbed, and 85 was EFI.

No rust and runs ok, good price. He probably means 2.4l. if you decide to wheel it and you reach the limits of IFS, SAS' are pretty easy these days.

how much of a lift can this take before messing with drive lines or the IFS?

I would probably run 32's with Roger Brown's ball joint spacers Toyota 2WD/4WD IFS Front Ball Joint Spacers for Pickup, 4Runner and T100

Then you can use a combo of longer shackles, add a leaf or (last resort) lift blocks to get the back level.

You won't have to mod the drivelines, it will still have good steering alignment and you can use the stock gearing. The dif drop brackets are total crap, way too much leverage on the stock mounts.

I wouldnt lift, Id trim the fenders and leave it low. If its not your DD then weld the rear and go with a 4.7 kit. Somewhere in the FAQ theres an article about fitting 33's or 35's with no lift. The IFS would hold up to a 33 for a while, maybe a 35 if your smart about your lines.

Awe yes a good question I can't answer. I've never inflicted this damage myself but have seen a few come my way with cracks in the same place, right at the steering stops...I'm guessing someone who was really cranking on the wheel while moving the suspension up and down...a lot. Just something to look for as I have seen a few with this damage, that's all.
