Looking at 88 PU

I'm looking at an 88 4x4 Toy PU I may buy. It has the V6 engine.
I don't know much about them. What do I need to look for, any
problems with these engines? It has 180,000 miles on it.
Thanks,
Rob

OK, the frame looks good. How about the V6 engine, do they
last as long as the 22Rs? This one has a tick to it, not sure
if it's in the valve train or could be a rod?

Others might disagree but the 3.0 would be a dealbreaker for me..... do you know the history of the maintenance at all?

Don't know any history. The body and frame are in great shape.
But I'm a little leary of this engine myself. I think I'll pass on it.

The early V6's (88-89) didn't have it as bad, but the 3.0 V6 is a head gasket eater. It's way underpowered for the gas mileage you get, but it is more fun to drive than the 4 bangers.... If you're a mechanic, then I wouldn't worry about the V6, if you're not, hold out for a 4 banger, everything's easier on them.

Do a compression test on all 6 cylinders, and check the oil for water (will look like milkshake) and look for white goo under the oil fill cap.
