Cold Air
Has anyone switched their truck to cold air? Is it worth the money, am I going to gain any power, or is dropping my K&N filter about all I am going to get through this route. Still shopping for headers, however getting Mama to buy off on this is anouther story.

For a little extra go go without tearing the engine down? Are you fuel injected or carbed?

If you wheel it, forget cold air kits unless it's a snorkel

lol... (If I can say that here)
OP, once you pull off your existing exhaust manifolds (which will be HARD), you'll see the majority of why we call it the 3.slow. One tube almost blows right back up the other. In the 2001 cat I have, Downey claims their header will do 11hp when routed back to the stock exhaust. 14 and "radical bottom end" when routed through their 2 1/2 system...
If I had the money, I'da done it LONG ago... I have a 14mm head bolt 3.0 and it's NEVER let me down... I love the things... well, except for the bad MPG's it gets, but I've got a intake gasket leaking...
As for the Cold Air kit, most are just tubes that get the intake inlet out of the hot engine compartment. And most run low to get it. In a 4wd that defeats a lot of purpose and it's kinda a waste of time, unless it never sees any water or mud.
You can get cool air from a cowl induction to, but that's either a custom piece, and or gonna get expensive. My guess as to why it's not done a lot is b/c of aerodynamics...
A Safari or ARB Snorkel will work to.

dont matter if it was a V10 or a damn briggs & stratton engine.
same results same reasons why NOT to waste time with it.
bottom line you want a "cold air intake" buy a damn honda and roll those lame 20 inch wheels with it.

Snorkels are the offroad version of Cold air intake if they were called "clean" air intake instead of 'cold' air intake. Not only will it take cooler air into the system, it will prevent water and dust from entering your engine.

Personally I prefer to leave the stock air box with an aftermarket filter. it has more than once saved my intake from sucking in water in deep water crossings where an open air filter or cold air would have been sucking it up.

Don't think so.
open filter has to be almost completely submerged.
Most of the stock systems have a tube, that works remarkably well as a straw to make it MORE likely to hydro-lock. And the intake location is great for air... really bad for a "bow wave".

Ya, I ever quite understood that, putting the intake right behind the headlight like that.

Bad idea, especially off road. Snorkel = win, you're not faster but functionally you're better off.

I personally would really think twice about the headers too. LOTS of money for very little gain, if any.
Call Tim at DOA Racing Engines: D.O.A. Racing Engines This guy knows the 3VZ-E very well, and how to get every bit out of it.
