My 1989 4Runner with the 3vze seems to have what I believe to be a knock in the bottom end. I was finally able to record these two audio clips and I'm hoping you guys can tell me for sure, since I've never actually heard a 'knock' in person.

If you have a timing light, hook it up and pull the trigger. Watch the light and see if the noise is in time with the light (probably a valve train issue) or if it's going faster than the light (more likely in the bottom end). The MP3's sound a little tinny so it's hart to say for sure. Also you can use a long piece of wood to listen to the engine, by pressing it on the head and block and sticking your ear to it to help isolate where the noise is coming from.

Thanks, I'll borrow one and try that. The mp3's turned out really well, the sound is very 'tinny' and 'hollow'. Other people have suggested it may be an accessory bearing on it's way out or an idler pulley. In clip #2, when I rev it, I thought it was interesting that it seemed the engine slowed down more quickly than the sound, or at least that's what it sounded like to me.

hey take a long screw driver and stick it on the part that looks like a water pump and also has a pulley and your fan attached to it. lay your ear on the handle of the screw driver if it is coming from it you will hear it in the handle. be careful not to hit the moving parts. if not move it around and you will find where it is coming from. also i have spun the rod bearings twice this year in my 22re when the spun the knock was deafening and it lost all power.
