front hubs hard to turn / + wheel stud question

My front hubs are pretty hard to turn between free/locked. Is it simple as taking them off and greasing them? Also, one of my rear wheels has a stud broken off. Is that hard to replace? I'm still trying to track down a FSM so figures I'd ask in the meantime. Thanks.

Could be.

It could also be that they are corroded inside and that they need to be removed, cleaned, tested and then put back on if they work properly on the bench.

There is a reason why Toyota suggests in the owners manual to engage the lockouts once a month and to operate the vehicle for a few miles with the front axle engaged.

Replacing the rear axle stud should not be that big of a deal. You should be able to drive the old one out and pull the new one in. However, the wheel studs typically fail due to the lug nuts being pulled up too tight and then rusting into that position. I would inspect the other five and replace them all if any others appear suspect.

FSM links........

Typically everything in the front hub just needs cleaned and lubed, maybe the seal replaced.

I had two broken studs (on different hubs) in the last year or so and decided to replace all of the studs. I figured as many times as they had been stressed (and probably over-stressed) in the last 24 years that they were most likely approaching their end of life. If you inspect the studs on one hub and don't like what you see then I suspect you won't like the condition of the other studs either.

Thanks all...probably tackle this next weekend. We just had all our household stuff delivered from Alaska so we are neck deep in boxes (the garage is stuffed full too!)...and my wife is due to have the baby any day now!

Take it easy & thanks for the great advice as always!
