Vacuum Leak - 3VZ-E, Air Suction Reed Valve?

I have a '92 pickup with the 6 cylinder 3VZ-E engine. For some time now, there has been a pretty loud noise from the passenger side of the engine compartment. It sounds like an unmuffled engine. I have also noticed that I have very little power when accelerating and it acts like the engine is "missing" in the lower RPM ranges. I friend of mine listened to it and said it sounded like a vacuum leak. He messed around a little and traced it to a box near the back of the engine on the passenger side. It has 2 metal plates with a gasket between them. The plates have separated and when closed the engine noise improves significantly. Looking in the Haynes manual, I think this is the "air suction reed valve." Does this sound right? If so, can I just replace it? What does it do? Could it be responsible for the power loss? The manual doesn't say anything about it. It just shows it in a diagram. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Welcome to Mud!!!!

Wait a minute..... 2 years a member and this is your first post?

I don't know much about the ASRV, but if you look in the FAQ thread here, there is a 93 FSM link that you can learn all about it from.

Thanks.
Just a little nit-pick. The 3RZ-FE is a 4 cylinder engine used in 1995+ trucks. You should have the 3VZ-E which would be the 3.0 vee6.

Yep, you're right. I put the wrong letter in. Sorry for the confusion.
