Crank pulley rubbing Oil Pump timing tab - help!

Hello,

I replaced the timing chain on my 85 Pickup 4x4 (22R), and after I put everything back together and started it, the crank pulley is now rubbing the timing mark tab on one side. It almost seems like the oil pump is on crooked....but I loosened the pump bolts and there is no play in it. I spoke to Tod at engnblder and he suggested that there might be something wrong with the harmonic balancer....has anyone ever replaced this? I think he may be right, as I can't find any other reason this might happen.

The truck was running, and this was not a problem before I took it apart. I reused the timing cover, oil pump, and water pump. Truck has about 270,000 miles, with about 30,000 on a rebuild (receipts from the PO).

Howdy! Been a few years since I was workin' on mine, but is there supposed to be a spacer on top of the oil pump drive gear that would move the pulley out away from the pump cover just a bit? Just a hazy recollection. John

Ya sounds like a spacing problem to me. Did you replace the bottom chain sprocket? Maybe it's a wee bit too thin. The spacing is very tight down there.

Does the pulley wobble when the engine is running?

Hello!

There was no spacer when I pulled everything apart. I did replace the bottom chain sprocket with one from engnblder though and thought of that very same thing this morning....do you think that might be it? Can I use the old one down there again with a new chain? I used the engnblder kit in my 88 22R and everything worked fine......

The pulley does not wobble or look like anything outside of the normal. I was thinking that I may have damaged it because I had to use a tie-strap connected to the frame to hold it in place so I could torque it. Is there any visual way to determine if this is messed up?

Hello! Just a follow up to this...the issue was the crank pulley. I purchased a new pulley and compared the two - the old pulley was about 1/4 inch closer to the oil pump. The pulley has about 270,000 miles on it...I think I must have messed it up when using the tie downs to hold the pulley in place. Maybe this will help someone else.
