3.0 Loud Tap

Hey all. I have a 94 Pickup 4x4 with a 3.0. Problem is I was out wheeling climbing a hill and when I reached the top I noticed a loud tap. Shut it off towed it to my buddy's shop. The noise sounds like it is coming from the front of the driver side valve cover. I removed the valve cover ran the truck and the noise seems to be in time with the front lobe on the cam. i took the timing belt cover off and dont see anything there. dont know where else to look. any help would be great. Thanks

is it still running? Sounds like a "take it apart till you find the problem" thing... I hope it's simple!!!

i ran it with the valve cover off. Was hoping someone on here would have had a similar problem, and give some advice for another place to look.

Have you tried to isolate the noise using a stethoscope, or a long piece of wood? If you have a timing light, hook it up and see if the sound is in time with the light, or if it's not. If it seems to be with the light, then it's probably a valve train related issue, if it's going twice as fast as the light, then look at the crank area...

Broken valve spring is a good bet.
It happens from time to time on the 3.0
