Scored this RN47 for $250!

I bought this '80 last week for $250. It's a ranch truck that never left the ranch with only 109K! I was thinking of setting it up kind of retro with a shackle lift and some 31" muds that look old school.

Don't lift it, just stick 31's on there!

And what's with all the $200 trucks now! First gold 4Runners, now this!!!!!

My buddy from New Zealand got this '85 4Runner last year for FREE! Then I gave him a set of tires, reworked the suspension and set up the gears for him... Lucky bugger.

Actually it's not on fire... I'm doing a 2nd gear high range burn out in that pic! It's one of the strongest 22re trucks I've ever driven after we worked the bugs out and tuned it a bit. I think it might have some head work or something.

So after fixing the clutch slave for about $17 total I filled it up, got insurance and took it on a 240 mile road trip... I got 20 mpg!
A little low geared for the big interstate highway but this thing is awsome. Feels about like 5.29s and 32" tires on my '94 back in the old days. I went about 70.
It even peels out around town... Makes me wonder why the heck they ever did away with the 20r.

You have a point there... but I allready have a dedicated trail/wheeling rig. The SASed '94 I have for my avitar is undergoing a 3RZ swap, allready has 5.29s, upgraded birfs and 4.7 transfer case gears, RUF, Chevy rears, etc. etc... Maybe I'll 3 link that one some time.

I also have an '81 trailblazer (or what's left of one) that I have for a super beater competition rig with welded diffs, 34" swampers on beadlocks, lower gears and a whole lot of other cheap tricks so I don't need an old trail beater either.

I know I'm being over nostalgic with a rig that is not worthy, but I just want to fix it up a bit and use it for a mild trail/daily driver. I have enough trucks in the stable to finally have one like that. Now I just need an '85 4Runner.

Here it is hauling hay. What a podunk huh!

"I know I'm being over nostalgic with a rig that is not worthy, but I just want to fix it up a bit and use it for a mild trail/daily driver."

I had an '80 just like it, and HATED the low gearing and 4 speed, and the uncomfortable suspension that feels like a stagecoach...BUT...

they are well know for being the first off-the-lot really offroad capable truck sold to the masses, and after having the '84, I DEFINATELY think that the older ones are way more durable and indestructable in the long run, than the '84 and newer...

I have been wanting to get a '79-'83 for the last few years. now, if I could only get rid of this vintage Landcruiser addiction that i have...or FIND ONE FOR $250!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So After I got the truck I changed the trans oil and it was still golden brown with no chunks or shavings... Today I drained the transfer case. Like 2 tablespoons came out! I've probably put 2000 miles on it since I bought it! How the heck did it run like that without friction welding itself?! It runs alot quieter now.

Kayak: Hey you are in Montana... If you want a cheap mini truck all you have ot do is scan the classifieds and look for a farmer who refuses to buy metric tools when something on their old Toyota finally gives out. There is no love for Japanese 4WDs up here so they sell them CHEAP east of the divide. Over by Missoula my '80 would have brought $1500-$2000. Over here it was $250 Just be patient, one will come. If you want I'll keep my eye out for you on the GF Tribune.

So my buddy Gary came down with his Tacoma with no compression in 2 cylinders and tore it apart in my garage... The exhaust valves on the two dead holes were kind of egg shaped! He drove a street bike 120 miles home to Havre that night and came back the next day with more tools in one of those Daewoo cars. The Daewoo threw a rod about 10 miles from my house and now resides stationary on our property in a puddle of it's own blood. He offered me $400 for the '80 since he had no other cars to drive, which I promptly refused, but I sent him home with it to drive until his Tacoma is running again. I allready miss it :(.

On the bright side though, I am ordering an Aussie Locker for it next week!
