Extracab+mercedes 5cyl turbo diesel to stock 5speed

yup you read right.

this is getting done at defiant4wd here in mississauga.
its not my truck nor am i doing the swap, merely helping in where i can and taking some pics.

this is going to be a street legal offroad truck, theres is no rush to complete the project but we'd like to have done soon so it can be enjoyed(offroaded)

what we got:
taco chasis and body
5cyl mercedes turbo diesel
stock tranny

truck sits on raised and moved back body mounts. has 38.5x14.5r15 ground hawgs. a new fuel tank, dismantled interior with a wiring, wait there are no wires!...

needed:
adapter plate for the tranny, which is being fab'd up
and a wiring harness for the motor
a really thin fan with electric fan(on the outside)

we also know that stock mercedes motor mount cant handle offroading, so a solution is being worked on

this is the second time we do this swap in a mini @defiant
shoot away if you got any questions

(box is being 'cleaned up')
pics

chasis

body

donor

where the wires at?

attached body and prep

om617

adapter being designed/fitted

thats it for now, ill have more as the build progresses

Very cool, great engine. Gets some closeups of the transmission adapter, fella might be smart to make a template of the adapter.

Great to see a thread on the process. I was over at Defiant a few weeks ago checking out the swap into the 4Runner. There is a good possibility that I will be going this route in the future after seeing how well it was working. Take lots of pics please.

tristans (red 4runner) has put a few thousand kms on the mercedes motor so far, even with 38in tires he gets 20mpg which is like stock 22re i think? but the 22re with 38s only got 8-10mpg. this is with 5:29 in the diffs. i wonder how good the milage would be with stock tires??

offroad wise, the truck+motor is a beast, can idle over and through almost anything.

i tell him hes either got to take the body lift out, or get bigger tires, either way its cheaper to do nothing and and see how far down the trail it gets you. its also got 2 lockers...

or are you talking about the motor, that 5cyl i think might be better/or just as good has any toyota(hino) motor out there
the manual that comes with the mercedes states the timing belt be replaced every 800000kms.
if read only good things about this engine
tristans motor has 600000 and we can find anything wrong with it
i am no an expert

ps, did you watch the vid??

i personally have a more pure truck :P
because its cheaper

template ...lol that is the template
it was made to get everything to line up
then its going to the machine shop
i think tristan said he going to be making a kit out of it adapter plate and mounts to retain the stock toyota mounts so it'll be a bolt in application then you'd have to deal with the wiring yourself

Pics of the whole process of course, I've seen the 4Runner with the motor installed and would like to see it up close during the build. Like I said, I am seriously thinking about this swap myself and want to know exactly what I am up against. I know Tristan would help if I were to do it and I would definatly get the adapter plate from him.

well at this point were kinda stalled....
bad tranny gears 1-5 are fine reverse is fu*ked
so until we get a new tranny for it we play the waiting game
like i said before we are goin to try to make mounts that use the factory locations on the toyota frame but the cab on this truck has been pushed back 2 and a half inch's so were kinda screwed on that ...... it would make the motor end up in the cab on a regular truck ...its just really tight ill get some pics of it tomorrow for you

the owner ->scott has found a 5speed, harness, all interior pieces...

the truck was wired
dash is going back in
the adapter plate is being machined so that it can be multiplied

sorry i got no pics, but the project was finished at the end of july while i was on vacation,
the truck is complete and has been tested offroad.

it needs an electric fan because the motor fan sits to close to the rad for comfort

That engine is tip top of the line quality wise. 500,000miles is easy to get out of it. People were really pissing and moaning when they put the newer larger engines into the Sprinters. They wanted the old reliable. It has plenty of power to move around a 3 ton cargo van.

That's a cool idea. German and Japanese engineering at work together again. Over 20 mpg on 38 inch tires sounds like a winner.
