I am in the middle of replacing the clutch in my '85 4Runner and some of the parts are not matching up.

I ordered a clutch kit from O'Reilly and the throwout bearing that came with the kit does not match up with the bearing that I pulled out of the truck. I know the previous owner put a clutch kit in the truck before I bought it, but I do not know what parts he used...

Here is the throwout bearing and assembly that came out of the truck:

Old T/O Bearing 1:

Here is the new bearing that came with the kit:

New T/O Bearing 2:

The two bearing are different...the new bearing is flat w/o a raised lip. This is the style of bearing I had always used when replacing clutches in Land Cruisers. The old bearing has a raised race on it which is different that I have seen before in my limited (4 land cruisers) clutch changes.

The new bearing is a smaller inside diameter and will not fit on the old assembly. Is it possible that the old bearing and assemble are an aftermarket or non-OEM item?

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

This is your problem.

Trust me on this, I had to learn my lesson the hard way. It REALLY sucked.

Take that POS back, take your VIN down to the dealer or call C-Dan, get the right thing. Never EVER skimp on a clutch. Go OEM, or there are some decent aftermarket ones out there too, Centerforce for instance.

I think it may be a 4Runner W56 thing... My 89 4Runner had that one piece bearing, and the clutch I got From Marlin, came with the "new" bearing you show... I went and got the bearing holder out of my dad's 84 parts truck, and put the new bearing in... I don't know what trucks got which bearing... but to use that new one you'll need another part....

Edit: The "new" bearing you got is shown as the bearing for the V6 trans in my 89 FSM, but my dad's 2 1984 22R/G52 trucks have the same one.... the plot thickens...

I put my 89 22RE VIN into the parts catalog, and it says the 2 piece bearing is "not applicable" although it does show it on the parts breakdown...

89 4Runner 22RE:

When I looked up an 84 pickup with a 22R, it shows both, and says the 1 piece is not applicable... So I think they started with the 2 piece (which just feels and looks tougher to me...) and at some point went to the 1 piece which is kind of flaky...
IMO....

Last edit: I love the online parts catalog!!!! I'd marry it if I wasn't spoken for!

Jerod,

Thanks for sending that link. That helps in solving the issue. It looks like the "new" kit came with the wrong bearing...

EDIT- The truck had the wrong T/O bearing and bearing hub installed. Not to mention the pressure plate had three bolts that were loose! The previous owner didn't think it was important enough to use locktight on the pressure plate bolts! Idiot...

I ordered the correct T/O bearing and hub from Toyota and got everything back together today.

Cheers,

tp
