Rig O' the Month, July '08 "The James Caird"
Alright! I feel like a nap, but I told Pappy I'd get to it this weekend. Hehe
I'll probably add to this over the next few weeks, but here's a start. First, how I got my 4Runner in the spring of '05. I wrote all about it for Toyota Trails, so I'm going to cheat, and give you guys a link to that.
TLCA : Toyota Trails, March/April 2007
It was a fun bus ride, as all Greyhound trips are....
If you're interested about the name of my truck, here's a short explanation: James Caird (boat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
And if that peaked your interest, this is one of the better books on the subject.
Amazon.com: Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage: Alfred Lansing: Books
Truck specs as of Feb '09:
306k miles
22RE engine that's been shade-tree'd back to life
5 speed W56 trans still hanging tough
Marlin Crawler 4.7 t-case gears
Stock 4.10 diffs (4.30 e-locker waiting in living room to be regeared)
33x10.5 BFG MT's
JDM "Hilux Surf" Altimeter/Clinometer
2nd Gen SR5 4Runner buckets
SR5 Map lights
Mitsubishi muffler.... It was free and mine was way bad....
Attached are 3 pics, the first is one of my favorites from the 45 Run last year, taken by Bull here on Mud. The second 2 are the most recent pics.... Sadly towing it home from Ashland, OR. And where it rests for now. If you have been reading, you know that I have an ignition problem, and since I have the little red Honda, I haven't been dieing to get it running again.... But I'm back on the case! Don't worry, the Caird will rise again, soon hopfully!

Rocking the soft top just out side of town.
My Hilux Surf Altimeter/Clinometer/Oh-S#!T-ometer. I've only been over to 25, but that was enough....
And my front end after a snowy drive to work...

Wheeling last Christmas... If you noticed the dent in my bumper in the last picture, here's where I got it.... I dropped into this hole and wham!
I was denied here, I need a locker. 13 point turn and I almost made it out, but had to get the strap.

Wow. I've never actually seen the timing chain broke. Usually its just the guides or tensioner.

2ndGen, this might be a dumb question, but I must know. What is McGrew Dust? Where does it come from? What is it made of?
The James Caird is a worthy vessel- you should be proud.

Broken timing chain is NO FUN.
When I bought mine (first vehicle I ever bought, BTW) I let my brother drive it home (hey, he graduated from H.S. that day), and the next day I drove it into town. It didn't start. So I literally drove it once after buying it before my timing chain broke.
I've got both fingers crossed for you buddy. But hey, this might just be the excuse you need to make it more awesome (c'mon, 1KZ-TE--you know you want to!).
I love the Caird, that is one good looking truck!

Thanks! After riding at Rubithon this year, I know I don't want to go all out... It's just too slippery of a slope....
